Put him in OPP.

Let him rot there.

His name could be Big Daddy Mitch and his slogan "I'm now your bitch."

It's funny because the people that would normally support Mitch's strategy, in as much as it seeks to resolve the looming pension avalanche nightmare, are so pissed about his other bullshite (statues, etc) that they don't give a shite.

New Orleans never pays civil judgments. What makes this one different?

They didn't wait for it to go to judgment. Instead, they announced a settlement in open court, and agreed to an injunction. Now, there's an actual order to pay that he's violated, hence the contempt.

There still isn't any way to enforce the judgment itself, i.e. seize assets, due to the Constitutional protection for political subdivisions.

Every tax payer in the city should just pay a 1,000 bucks and be over with it. Before we know it the city will owe a billion dollars to the firefighters and it will bankrupt the city.

So that's $2,000,000, but where does the remaining $73,000,000 come from?

Meh. You don't pay a ton of taxes to the city compared to other nearby parishes.

I'm in favor of a tax increase to pay the firefighters and get this behind us before the interest due cripples the city.

Oh my fricking bad the city can't pay it's obligations when we have gov't employees out the wazoo, shitty infrastructure, generation after generation of gov't corruption, incontrollable crime, and resources being allocated to removing "racist" statues. Put it on the tax payers dime, frick you. Stop being so goddamn wasteful. This city has tons of money rolling in, they just flush down the fricking drain.

These fire fighter entitlements are bullshite and people point the finger at Mitch like he is responsible for this. I know a few retired fire fighters and they have pretty nice life styles. No one has mentioned anything about the fire fighter Union owning Lakewood country club and profiting off that toward their retirement.

Maybe you should ask for a pension? I work in the private sector and am not union and I have a pension. Most super major oil companies do and I can either receive a lump some or a "pay check" plus my 401k. The promise with government pensions are that they are often mismanaged.

The city does that all the time, I'm all for the firemen getting what they are owed. But what about all of the other people the city owe money to?

quote:

When the police cruiser hit him, Leroy Davis never saw it coming. The impact shredded the flesh and muscle off of one leg. The police car's spinning wheel burned a hole through the calf muscle of the other.

Surgeons were able to save the burned leg, though it remains badly deformed. His right leg had to be amputated.

The city agreed to give Davis $2 million in damages. But it simply refuses, as it has hundreds of times over the past decade, to pay up.

Davis is one of more than 600 people waiting on a check from the city after winning a judgment or settling for damages. Their cases, mostly personal injury claims like Davis' but also some judgments stemming from contract disputes, date to 1996. Before interest is taken into account, the city's own records show it owes them $34.7 million, more than double what it owed for judgments and settlements 20 years ago.

Like many large cities, the city self-insures. Rather than engaging an insurance company to pay claims in exchange for premiums, the city pays plaintiffs' court judgments and settlements directly. At least that's the theory.

In practice, plaintiffs simply go on the bottom of an ever-growing list of individuals and companies that have won their day in court. The city periodically issues debt to pay down the tab, but it hasn't done so in 10 years.

Lost his leg, job, & house. But has a $2 million IOU
