Mitch Landrieu blames his staff, media, and the public for not informing him of SWB mess

Landrieu insists his staff didn't inform him of pump problems
"At one point during the committee meeting, a board director remarks, "that's scary" when told the city didn't have the ability to generate power for its pumping stations. Board members go on to laugh about the problem, joking about fixing the turbines and describing the situation as being "headed toward a blackout."
"It causes me concern. The chairman pro tem (director Scott Jacobs, who resigned last week) was there, other board members were there. It was a public meeting. The press never reported on it," Landrieu said. "This is what ringing the bell looks like."

The old Paterno defense. That's a bold strategy

It's Mitch Landrieu's fault.
No fricking way the "I read about it in the newspaper" defense works here. That sack of shite is criminally negligent for allowing New Orleans to flood by allowing the pumps to become inoperable.
He's pissed that this ruins his chance to run for president, but he's far to incompetent to run a lemonade stand.

Surprised he didn't blame Russia.

Modern day leadership; take no responsibility or accountability for anything......blame others

I mean, why would the mayor of a city that is below sea level concern himself with something ridiculous like water pumps?
He's got MONUMENTS to remove, dammit.

Uhhhh...
That EXACT strategy worked for our last Progressive POTUS for 8 years. He was applauded every single time he did it.
Should be no surprise other Progressive leaders followed.

Well, they say write two letters for your replacement. In the first letter tell your replacement to blame you for any major problems. In the second letter tell your replacement to write two letters.
ETA: this is how they (the wacko leaders on both extreme sides) will be defeated.
They ALL eventually turn against each other after "the man" can no longer be blamed.

Damned idiot. NOLA better hope he is out of office before another hurricane hits the area.

On the bright side, he's managed to bring the city back together over everyone's mutual disdain for his administration. Haven't talked to a single person on any side of the political spectrum that's tried defending him in months.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said again Wednesday (Aug. 16) that he is willing to take the blame for not knowing about the problems that led to the Sewerage & Water Board's ongoing crisis, but he maintains his staff didn't notify him about the problems.
Apparently not. Gotta love it when someone says that they will take the blame but then immediately blames others. I think that's called character or something.

Now Landrieu is quoted "We hire people, whose job it is to know these things & handle these situations" I agree with the Mayor. The taxpayers pay for his Deputy Mayors at an avg salary of 6 Figures that he claimed he needed them to handle the gargantuan rebuilding of the city's infrastructure. They would report directly to him and he would hire the best and the brightest to fill those Deputy Mayor positions. The city agencies could not longer be run by department heads. New Orleans Post Katrina needs were too big for department heads so he got what he wanted Department heads were out. Very expensive Deputy Mayors were in. His handpicked deputy mayor Cedric Grant was also given the executive director's job at the Sewerage and Water Board Landrieu had to go to the legislature to have a law changed so Grant could assume that position. Cedric Grant reports directly to him. How could the Sewerage and Water Board declare an emergency on March 13th and the mayor & board president not be informed? Emergency contracts were given out and the President of the SW&B which is Mitch Landrieu was not informed? Fox 8 showed footage of a July 19th S&WB board meeting last night in which lack of S&WB manpower was discussed. Sitting next to President Pro Temp Scott Jacobs is Deputy Mayor Jeff Hebert another one of the Mayor's closest advisors.Guess Landrieu had no idea about the manpower shortage that has led to the 1/2 Billion Drainage construction backlog.
So now Landrieu continues to try to insulate himself from another S&WB debacle. Blaming everyone & claiming ignorance. Sorry Mitch no one is buying you didn't know the condition of the pumping system. I do have one question? Why did Cedric Grant not get fired like everyone else you claimed is responsible & Grant is allowed to retire on November 30. Is it because he knows how much & when Landrieu knew about the compromised pumping system? Does he give the mayor plausible deniability & the Mayor gives him a graceful exit with his golden parachute in tact & who are the other Deputy Mayor's that attended Board Meetings in the Mayor's place & why weren't they fired? Is it they could expose you & the company lie? These are the kind of questions that get asked when trust is lost.

There's an opportunity for structural reform here as well. The mayor is the "President" of a lot of different entities. Maybe that needs to be cut back. Or maybe those entities need to be rolled directly into city government.
