Disney’s dominance of copyright law prevails as only the ‘Steamboat Willie’ version of Mickey Mouse enters public domain -Forbes
Now that anyone can use the character without fear of being sued by Disney, there is no telling where it will be showing up.

In a moment many close observers thought might never come, at least one version of the quintessential piece of intellectual property and perhaps the most iconic character in American pop culture will be free from Disney’s copyright as his first screen release, the 1928 short “Steamboat Willie,” featuring both Mickey and Minnie Mouse, becomes available for public use.
“This is it. This is Mickey Mouse. This is exciting because it’s kind of symbolic,” said Jennifer Jenkins, a professor of law and director of Duke’s Center for the Study of Public Domain, who writes an annual Jan. 1 column for “Public Domain Day.” ”I kind of feel like the pipe on the steamboat, like expelling smoke. It’s so exciting.”
U.S. law allows a copyright to be held for 95 years after Congress expanded it several times during Mickey’s life.

I don’t know if Walt would recognize woke Disney. I hope it burns.

No more need for creators to buy a license from Disney.

I think Disney sucks in a lot of ways but “dominance over copyright law”? Mickey is Disney. How does anyone deserve to have the rights to him other than the company that created him?

Why would you want a copyright to be indefinite? What a mess that would be.

The “Steamboat Willie” version is now public domain but they’ve already said any other version of Mickey, as well as things like mouse ears, etc would be voraciously defended.
When they unfreeze Walt’s head, he’s gonna fire everyone anyway.

quote:Exactly. There’s no princesses without those copyrights expiring. The ability to take old stories and characters and make something new for today’s audience is kind of important. Imagine if Shakespeare’s family had control over all of his works still and decided never to let anyone share them. Or if every fairytale was locked away. This needed to eventually happen.

That Mickey is still copyrighted.
This one is in the public domain.
quote:
Current artists and creators will be able to make use of Mickey, but with major limits. It is only the more mischievous, rat-like, non-speaking boat captain in “Steamboat Willie” that has become public.
“More modern versions of Mickey will remain unaffected by the expiration of the Steamboat Willie copyright
