Its like those poor schmoes driving around all day looking from scrap metal. They burn more gas and time than what they get from the metal yard.

It's fascinating to me.

I once heard a story of someone breaking into the recycling facility in North BR and hauling off a compressed bundle of crushed aluminum cans. Guy told me there are upwards of 10,000 cans in one of those. He said they are compressed so tight, that unless you had the proper tools, you would have to break off one can at a time using a crowbar. Would love to see someone try to drop that off at their local recycler.

Just a thought, wouldn't the amount of cans be the felony? For instance, he would have made $1000. In a sense, he would be "stealing" that money from the state and stealing anything over $500 is a felony, correct? Or is it a felony even if he returned one can?

He committed no crime.

Unless driving around with a bunch of trash in your truck is a crime.

He did not attempt to get money for the cans yet. I don't understand why the cop didn't just say "You can't do that, turn around and go back to where you came from".

Read the article first, the law professor (and former prosecutor) they got for commentary sez it could go either way, it apparently isn't that clear-cut.

It's like the little Chinese ladies in my neighborhood who steal all the recyclable cans from everyones recycle bin on garbage day and then sell them.

No one really cares and they make a little money.

Dayum that's just awesome. Seinfeld writers were ahead of their time.
