Me and the gf going to see Dolphins game in the fall. We are flying into ft lauderdale and staying for few days. Should we get hotel there and commute to city or is it better to stay in Miami? Is the extra cost of staying somewhere in Miami worth it and if so where is a reasonable place to go? Thanks.

Driving around S Florida is generally a shite show, so I'd make my decisions so as to minimize travel distances... I think Aventura is probably the closest beach area to Sun Life...

I just spent a few days at the Miami Epic. I was there for work, but it was really nice.

There are alot of smaller hotels not on the beach that you can save alot of money at. Places like Loews are going to be crazy expensive, but you can stay a couple blocks away near Coconut Grove on Collins and pay less than half per night. But, it all depends on what you want to do. The smaller hotels SUCK if you want to hang by the pool all day. If you just want a centralized place to sleep I don't think the big hotels are worth the extra money.

Keep you head on a swivel. Don't leave valuables in the car.

There are usually some good GroupOn deals for hotels on Miami Beach. That's what I usually do.

This. And be mindful where you're going. Don't go driving around the city get lost and end up in the wrong part of town. If I remember right (it's been years since I was there) there's a section of the city called the "pork & beans". That's for sure where you don't want to end up.

Staying in Fort Lauderdale is not a bad option at all especially for a Dolphins game, the stadium is north of Miami and easy access from Fort Lauderdale.

Miami has kind of a weird layout. Staying in South Beach or that area is kind of away from the city itself, across the Biscayne Bay bridge and yes you will shell out some money to stay there.

Some parts of Miami are not the most desirable either.

the stadium is in Miami Gardens, which is about half way between FLL & MIA, depends on what you like to do, I lived there a number of years and I'd say MIA is a tad seedier that FLL, but there's probably equal decent places in either, it really boils down to what you like to do

There are no hotels anywhere near the stadium that you would want to stay in anyway, so get a place in South Beach. Eat at Prime 112, hit some touristy bars to people watch, then hit a real club. You'll drop serious coin, but WTF.

Not to mention, downtown, South Beach, and Key Biscayne are far as shite from the stadium -- and I-95 is a pain in the arse ... Really .. Fort Lauderdale is the best option, unless you want to stay in Oakland Park, Davie, Lauderdale Lakes, or Coral Springs ..

Stayed at the Hyatt in downtown Miami in Jan.

Use the rail system or uber to get around for things that are not walking distance.
