Mexico’s decision Friday to approve the extradition of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán helps clear the way for the infamous drug lord to face what has long been his worst nightmare: living behind bars in a U.S. prison.

quote:

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico confirmed that the death penalty was off the table, “consistent with our extradition assurance policies with Mexico.”

quote:

Guzmán “knows and is conscious that the real battle against extradition is going to be waged through the constitutional appeals process,” Rodriguez said, adding that the kingpin could stay in Mexico for one to three years as the appeals process plays out.

Guzmán now has up to 30 days to appeal the decision, after which a judge will decide how to move forward. His defense team has at least two attempts to appeal, according to The Washington Post, which could last months.

Here we go doing Mexico's work again. If they were that concerned about alleviating their own problems, they would have put a bullet in his head a long time ago.

He was transferred to a prison in Juarez. Makes me wonder if they are going to try and drive him across the Bridge of the Americas like they did in Sicario. If that's the case then yeah, he will never make it.

They should send him to Pablo Escobar's prison.

Put him in a cell with Chuck Manson and keep a camera on them. Great reality television right there.

Anyone see that documentary about Pablo? He was so powerful he built and operated his own prison in Mexico and was the only inmate.

If you ever needed a definition of true power, just look in the dictionary for this fact.

Hilarious. Looked like a prison for the press and outside world but ran his cartel and threw parties from there in reality.

All the dude had to do (Escobar) was just chill out for 5 years in his "prison" and he would walk free, never to be extradited to the US. But then the dumbfrick-one year into his sentence-summons 4 of his lieutenant's up to La Catedral and executes them. The Colombian government had had enough by that time and sent in their army to root him out. By then he was already gone-walked out the front gate.

If they kill him, his replacement will take over immediately. Its actually worse for their organization to have ambiguity when it comes to "who is their leader". They aren’t sure what the chain of command is with him behind bars.

Also, hopefully he can give us some information eventually about cartel activity on the borders and in the US in exchange for something.
