anyone who grew up in the 80s/early 90s remember the boom on trading cards?

just had a random memory of growing up and my Dad and I going to a sports collectible place in Sulphur every weekend to trade cards and memorabilia.

also we would go to the conventions at the lake charles civic center and surrounding areas where they would have a hundred or so booths of just collectables.

those were great memories. we would buy sets and leave the plastic on for years. i still have most of mine in the attic. Donruss, Upper Deck, Fleer, Topps. and that gum..... lol

better days...

Good times. My entire collection was destroyed by flooding.

Started in '87 with the wood grain Topps and the bubble gum that tasted a little bit like they had rescued it off the bottom of a public elementary school desk from the '50s.

I still remember being pretty psyched about my Brien Taylor and Todd van Poppel minor league cards.

The lucite vault I kept my Ryne Sandburg rookie card could probably withstand a 9mm bullet. That, the Mark McGuire and Ken Griffey Jr. rookie cards were my prized possessions.

Yup I had like 14 Bo Jackson cards. I had his rookie card for a while but an older kid stole it.

My mom used to buy me a pack every time I'd go to the grocery store with her.

I remember I got a Jose canseco elite card out of a pack. It was worth 400 bones.. Now it's worth like 4 dollars. I still have all of mine though. I probably have over 200 MJ cards.

Also pretty spectacular that there was an entire market for "error" cards.

Myself and my twin bro collected baseball, football, basketball during the early 80's.

Have all the rookies of Montana, rice, Marino. Baseball have the ripken jr, etc.
Funny thing was I hardly ever ordered basketball sets but got the 1986 fleer update it had like 125 cards in a small box: that years rookies: jordan, barkley, akeem, stockton. By far these are the most valuable minus the autograph cards I have. Internet destroyed the card industry for as value.

I remember people setting up card tables in Bon Marche Mall once in a great while. They sold really old and valuable cards that now make up the best part of the collection I share with my brother. Of course, they were in pretty bad shape, but as a 13 year old I didn't care. A beat up Mickey Mantle was still awesome.

The only cards I ever bought were off the store shelf in the late '60s and early '70s.

My highlight is a '67 Topps Reggie Jackson rookie card.

A twin to this one:

Anyone else who liked the triple plastic packs? I would look through the rack until I got a card I wanted showing.

I also had a few of the Topps sticker albums. They would let you trade in duplicate stickers. You would mail the extras to them and ask for ones you needed.
