MD Anderson not taking patients from Louisiana for April

Lifelong friends just posted they received a call this morning saying all chemo/appointments are cancelled for April for all Louisiana patients. Don't know what to think about that.

What about the oath medical professionals take? This is bullshite.

WTF? I hope that is fake.

Not fake. Have friend who has breast cancer and been treating there. Can’t go.

This seems like a terrible move. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for them.

Unless it was a prank phone call/April fool's which would be really really disturbing in a time like this!

Sue the shite out of everyone involved.

Building full of immunocompromised people?
Covid cases would be a fricking disaster.
A month is a long time to wait if you have cancer, mentally. But it’s not that horrific as far as the cancer goes.

Im sure they will do teleppointments

They have to choose which patients they can treat. They will be treating patients, but they aren't going to risk those patients for others. It's a tough call but one they have to make. The Louisiana patients are a risk for infecting all of their non-Louisiana patients.

Do No Harm?
Could argue they are by protecting them from a problematic population. The hundreds of patients they are already treating that is.

But church is waaay more important. Our governor is a shitshow.

shame on me

Correct. They do teleappointments. Only treat in person if urgent or a discontinuation in care would greatly harm the pt.
Curious how they are going to bill the telemedicine stuff.

Its not fake. I have a nephew who was just there last week for testicular cancer and they diagnosed him there and told him to go somewhere else for treatment. Wouldn't even let his parents in the building when they were diagnosing him

That's not true. And that hospital is important to people near it.
A month can make a hell of a lot of difference to some people. I've seen it happen. December they're having christmas feeling under the weather and weak, no diagnosis...then flash forward to march and you're buying their casket.
Hope someone from louisiana finds whoever made this decision, and cuts their throat in their bedroom.

Hopefully,MD Anderson can send their treatment protocol to an Oncology facility reasonably close to their home.I’m sure they would.
St.Judes did that for a friends son that had cancer so he wouldn’t have to travel there every month.

Much can be done with an e-visit. If the patient has a diagnosis and biopsy already? Samples could be sent to MDA pathologists and treatments started at satellite clinics. Special labs ordered outpatient. Could probably get a patient started then do full visits. When this blows over.
Is it a good idea to initiate chemotherapy and immunosuppressants during a pandemic? I think not but I am not sure of all the numbers and stats involved.

It’s not fake; my sister had an appointment on April 6th that MD canceled.

What % of their patients are from Louisiana?
If 10% are from Louisiana do you think its justified for them to allow the 10% to be treated at the risk of infecting and killing the 90%?
It's a hard decision either way, but its absolutely reasonable given the circumstances.
