I have owned 3 Hondas and four Acuras. Putting over 100,000 miles on each Honda/Acura cars have always been good to me. Bang for the buck a value, mechanically sound, and resale value has always been good. Currently driving a F-150 because I need something that can tow. The Ridgeline wasn't enough.

Mazda Quality
The ones from Japan are every hit as good or better.
I think the factory in Alabama produces both Mazadas and Toyotas under the same roof.

Mazda is also the top safety rated car out of all of them

Yes they do. They located that factory in the same cottonfield where I use to take my girlfriends when I was a teenager
Progress sure screws a lot of stuff up. There was a nice hill where you could see the lights of Huntsville and Decatur both, plus you could see the planes taking off at the airport pretty well.
It was also a great place to find arrowheads.

I test drive a Mazda every 10 years or so when shopping for a vehicle. Fun cars to drive. Much nicer driving than Toyota or Honda, but they don’t have much cargo space and golf clubs don’t fit well. Yes, I take golf clubs with me when car shopping.

Toyota just issued a major recall on the 93 Camry.
There's nothing wrong with the car, "It's just time for people to buy a new car."
This was peak Camry. They started cutting cost after that, to separate it from the Lexus models.
You still see this model often on the roads.
This was pretty much peak Toyota and Honda too.

But who buys a $50K Civic? Seriously. Its a Civic.

I can only speak of Toyotas. I am driving my 3rd Corolla. It has 160,000 miles and only service needed has been new tires and oil changes. My second was sold and is still being driven with over 350,000 miles on it.

Honda hasn’t slipped much. My brother got a new crv hybrid sport a few weeks ago. Very nice vehicle. My wife has previous generation CRV and is a very solid vehicle
I bought a 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring Edition back in July. That car is a very nice ride and enjoyable to drive. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that I've gotten no where to the MPG they advertise. I drive my car on eco mode all the time and the best I've gotten was 39.5 MPG.

I wish Mazda and Toyota would bring back these little gems:

In my mind, Mazda is the only serious reliability competitor that Toyota has, especially if it's a built-in-Japan Mazda. Honda's still good but is no longer the superlative Honda of the '90s.
All three are far more reliable than Hyundai/Kia.

The two cars I'm considering are the Corolla or the Mazda 3
Just test drive them and you will probably pick the Mazda. I chose it over the Corolla and Civic as it was simply more fun to drive. Its something Mazda's have had over the competition in the small car and sedan market for a while. I've owned two Mazda 3 and a 6 in the past 15 years and they have all been extremely reliable.

In general, how do Mazda vehicles stack up compared to Toyota? Honda? Hyundai?
Honda and Toyota are the best of the best. None of the others stack up. Period

Honestly Mazda has been stepping up the game for a few years now. Their styling, performance and quality for your buck give Toyota and Honda a run for their money imo on every comparable model.

We just bought our daughter a 2021 Mazda CX-30, surprising her with it today for her 16th birthday. Test drove the Honda HRV as well, the difference in interior & handling was huge. The HRV just felt cheap compared to the CX-30. In comparing like year models and like mileage, the Toyota was significantly more expensive. I'll let you know how we like it in a year or so, ha!

I've had 2 Mazdas that I bought for my kids. 2014 Mazda 3 and a 2013 CX-5. Both have been extremely reliable cars but the tech really seemed not very techy even when they were fairly new.

Let me just tell you that's all marketing. Sure they look nice but the real story is told by resale value or value retention. The Mazda may offer plenty of amenities and be priced competitively when compared to the same level Toyota or Honda, but the depreciation comparison isn't even remotely close.

The MX6 I had was more fun to drive than the Camry's and the Civic I had. Bought it new in December of 1989 and drove it until December of 2002. Replaced the radiator twice and the transmission once before I got rid of it. It only had 198K miles on it.
In the last three or four years I had it, it ran hot sometimes in Dallas' 100 degree heat. I replaced all of the hoses, but it would run hot that afternoon. The mechanics told me the radiator was low grade plastic. Said replacing it might solve the problem, so we did that. After the same running hot problem started back a couple of years later, I replaced it and got rid of it. I liked it enough to put up with that in it's last days.
Here's an Motor Week video of a 1988 MX-6 when they introduced them (on YouTube)
Mine had a five speed manual transmission. I wanted a manual transmission because I was driving around all day, and didn't want to be waiting on a 4 cylinder engine to get going. With the manual transmission, I cold take off as fast, or as slow, as I wanted.

1st, who really cares because if you are shopping Javanese you probably plan on running it into the ground.
But really your post doesn't add up when you factor in time/value of money.
