No, I feel as if I should not be obligated to express any sort of respect for her. Personally, I feel neither respect nor disrespect for her.

My argument is that you come across as saying that the PRIMARY reason for Angelou's fame is her race and gender. I disagree with that premise.

Then your argument is based on a premise you made up. I didn't say anything resembling that Maya Angelou's fame is primarily because of race or gender.

To be honest though, it could be. I don't really know how to draw lines on stuff like this. There are countless talented poets out there, and I don't know where to start in identifying why some become popular (and even fewer wealthy) and others remain in obscurity.

I see what youre saying. For example using the old dude in your example that died. What if I went around saying "that fricker owed me money so he can frick off After all he hasn't affected me personally so why should I care right."

Nobody is saying that you have to fake a "RIP she will be missed" or any of that. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I was always taught that was a real sign of respect.

I understand that, then my question is why did you come in the thread. If you for example, started a thread saying "my grandmother just went into a coma, please send prayers". Personally I don't know your grandmother and I know nothing about her. And say I wasn't a Christian. That would not be the time for me to come in and bash your religion. Nor would it be an appropriate time to start some "yo mama jokes"

My whole thing is, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. That is one of the biggest signs of respect imo.

That's sad news and I feel silly for admitting it, but I didn't think she was that old. Maybe in her 70s.

RIP.

Then why did you open the thread?

I have never knowingly read any of her work. I know she was very popular with the hippies in the late 60s.

A public figure died. Seems a good occasion to discuss (and hear what others are discussing) about them. Bored at work. The thread seems long, with lots of activity. I had nothing better to do. Many reasons, really.

But she was a public figure. Maybe some people hated her poetry. Maybe some think she was a racist. I don't know. I don't think people should be forced to say something nice (or nothing at all) about a public figure just because they died. Pretty different situation from a random family member of a poster dying.

Maybe its just me, but if a public figure died and you go in a thread just to say that you hated their poetry. I think you are very trashy. Jmo

I chose to honor maya and her craft by writing a poem and yes, it rhymes. it is about a grease spot on my bathroom wall I recently noticed. please honor ms. angelou and her legacy by reading it in her voice. thank you.

here is the poem:

When my butthole speaks in its flatulent drawl
I trudge to the toilet to answer its call.
There's a half bath I use at the end of the hall
that's about the size of an office stall.
It's a pooper's cocoon, cozy and small
that I frequent daily--about 3 times in all.
I noticed a grease spot that has cast a pall--
it's a shadowy circle on a satin white wall.
Whenever I wipe (and to write this takes gall)
my left hand holds the white tp ball
ready to gather brown fecal scrawls.
I lean to my right with my palm to the wall
to steady my body so I won't fall.
I guess hand secretions caused this grease ball
one day I will clean it with lemon Pine-Sol.

So the only reasons for opening the thread are to (i) express respect for her, or (ii) express disrespect for her? That's kind of odd.

That's fine, but I hope you're not directing that at me, because again, I have not expressed anything like that.

I wonder how many people would be honest and say they had no idea who the hell she was until Clinton made her his Poet Laureate.
