Matt Damon Guilty of "Whitesplaining;" Apology Fails

Matt Damon has apologized after sparking an uproar in the season premiere of HBO's "Project Greenlight" by explaining diversity in film to a successful black woman producer.
"My comments were part of a much broader conversation about diversity in Hollywood and the fundamental nature of 'Project Greenlight' which did not make the show," Damon said in a statement reported by Variety and other outlets.
"I am sorry that they offended some people, but, at the very least, I am happy that they started a conversation about diversity in Hollywood. That is an ongoing conversation that we all should be having."
But some said the apology was tone-deaf.
"DEAR POWERFUL WHITE MEN IN HOLLYWOOD-Here's a thought-try DOING SOMETHING," actress Rose McGowan tweeted. "Your awareness means nothing."
Another Twitter user chided Damon for suggesting that his comments started a conversation about diversity.
"Black people have BEEN having this conversation," the tweet read.

The actor and director's original comments came during a discussion about whom would be chosen to direct the film that will be made as part of the HBO reality series.
Producer Effie Brown ("Dear White People") reiterated her support for a directing team of a woman and an Asian man as the best equipped to handle a sensitive role in the film.
"I just want to urge people to think about, whoever this director is, the way that they're going to treat the character of Harmony, her being a prostitute, the only black person, being a hooker who gets hit by her white pimp."
Damon then stepped in, downplaying the chosen director's race as a factor in how the character would be treated.
"When we're talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film not in the casting of the show," Damon said to a clearly flabbergasted Brown.
"Hoo. Wow. OK," she said.

Damon's comments brought a quick, angry response, with many using the derogatory term "whitesplaining" or the derivative "damonsplaining" to describe what to some appeared to be a white man lecturing a black woman about diversity.
"The white men sitting on the sofa with Effie Brown, Matt Damon being chief among them, could not stomach the proposition that their whiteness created critical blind spots that would prevent them from telling the story of a Black female prostitute with dignity and care," wrote Brittney Cooper, a professor of women's and gender studies at Rutgers University, in Salon.

Look at this pasty white bitch trying to reset her 15 minutes.

I watched the episode and the whole situation was handled perfectly. Those complaining about the situation are absolutely warped and delusional.

Very original script. We've never seen this before in film.

Hollywood is a business ran to make money so they are going to use the most bankable actors and directors they can.
I'm going to start complaining about diversity in the NBA because screw the teams needing to win and turn a profit I just want to see more white people on the court.

Diversity is everywhere in Hollywood - in many cases, forced, awkward diversity.
I don't want to return to a time where women are portrayed only as frustrated housewives, people of color are portrayed only as domestics/criminals/prostitutes, etc., but for frick's sake - a person of color, LGBTIAP, foreign national, female, etc. are forced into any team, family, vocational setting, regardless of whether it makes any sense or even makes for good storytelling.
On the other hand, female and minority filmmakers are still suffering from low numbers, but, as Tony Soprano might say, "Whaddya gunna do?"

Has anyone ever answered what positives diversity brings to the table?

I love how the two libtards, Affleck and Damon, have been white shamed the past couple of years even though they are SJWs that supposedly champion the minority cause. fricking pussies.

This reminds me of our very own Rex getting banned from Democratic Underground for being too racist years ago.
When someone thinks Matt fricking Damn isn't leftist enough, the only one tone deaf there is them.
This isn't me agreeing or disagreeing with either position on diversity in movies...that shite can stay over on the PoliBioard as far as I'm concerned... just saying that Damon may be one of the most aggressively politically motivated and "conscious" dude's in Hollywood.
This is eating your own to the 10th power...

Don't go overboard with the anti-diversity stuff. In some instances, there is a decent case made for diversity. However, when that diversity is put in higher regard than the bottom line or effectiveness, that's when it is a problem.

Lol what a candy arse Damon is. Black people don't need our apologies, they need to fix their own problems in their own communities. Accountability and responsibilty comes to mind. This country is set up to where they are at an advantage. If you work hard, good things will come. They've guilted these dumbasses into believing that they are owed something.

There is diversity in Hollywood, what about guys like Samuel Jackson and Morgan Freeman?
Posted on 9/18/15 at 7:46 am to StringedInstruments
I have a question...why does diversity always seem to involve black people? What about Vietnamese people? Or Inuits? Or South Africans? Or Australians?

This thought process is all an attempt to give "diverse people" something that white people can't touch. I white person's opinion cannot be considered valid which is kind of the opposite of the whole meaning of being diverse. I understand that you need to include every viewpoint to be diverse, but in our white guilt, we allow them to basically say, "hey this film is about diversity, so white people you can sit this one out. And by you can sit this one out, we mean you have to sit this one out because we are going to tear into you and if you have any objections you are a racist and we will try to ruin your life".
In the spirit of diversity, we do have to realize that the white viewpoint is only a fraction of the whole, but it is still part of the whole.

Produced by Damon and Ben Affleck, Project Greenlight focuses on first-time filmmakers who are given the chance to direct a feature film. During the premiere on Sunday night, Damon interrupted producer Effie Brown (Dear White People), after she expressed reservations over how the chosen script’s one black character, a prostitute, would be represented onscreen.
“I just would want to urge people, whoever this director is, the way they’re going to treat the character of Harmony,” she said. “Her being a prostitute, the only black person being a hooker who gets hit by her white pimp.”
“When we’re talking about diversity. You do it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show,” Damon said in response. He later added that changing the rules to prioritize diversity “would undermine what the competition was supposed to be about, which is about giving somebody this job based entirely on merit and leaving all other factors out of it. This is strictly a film making competition.”
