Back in the old military I was in a year 2 or 3 enlisted person didn't have anything to say that anyone cared to hear. Real leadership wasn't scared to get in front of the world and say what needed to be said. But that was a long time ago when it meant something to be in the military and leaders were worth following.

You think the admiral or rear admiral needs to come out and give a press release about near collisions before an investigation is done?

Sure let a higher ranked leader summarize that and make their findings heard. Only a poor leader is so incompetent that he would need to micromanage a basic press statement to the fricking advocate.

How in the hell is an E-4 considered a spokesman for the Coast Guard

Because there is a rate in the Coast Guard for Public Affairs Officer. So, i would imagine a trained 3rd class PIO > some rando Officer.

Lmao, Why are you so upset? are you the E-4? Am I poo pooing on your sunshine?

I was initially joking around but I'm not sure what kind of command structure you are accustomed to but the most basic level NCO, barely wet behind the ears would never have been addressing the public years ago. And if you think an E-4 or an O-10 are the only options then I got nothing for you.

Enjoy your day. Didn't mean to upset you so bad.

Probably just these new DEI hiring policies.

Has not been a thing for our vessels; the financial implications are way too high, so most SSLs hire the best captains available.

The captains I’ve met for my company have top-notch credentials.

You didn’t upset me. I just don’t understand why you think it takes any skill to read out a basic press statement that someone else wrote and why it matters. Latasha the civilian coffee maker could have done it. Has zero to do with leadership or your “back in my day” goofiness.

Either move the piers where they won't get hit, or design them to withstand a big impact.

Designing them to withstand a major impact is part of the typical design process. Consider, however, that the bridge in Baltimore was built almost 50 years ago. Just imagine how much larger and more massive the big ships have become since then.

Building piers where they won't get hit seems pretty simple. The main span of the Francis Scott Key bridge was/is over 1200 feet. How much more of an opening do you provide to believe that the piers are outside of the susceptible range?

Transportation engineering is always in catch-up mode. If you design for a certain load, industry will immediately begin pushing that envelope.
