The Marine who led the charge to place the first American flag above Iwo Jima has died.

First Lt. John Wells, 94, died Feb. 11 at the Arvada Care Rehabilitation Center in Arvada, Colorado. He was severely wounded while directing an attack on a particularly formidable blockhouse that had halted his platoon’s advance.

Undeterred, he pressed the attack until the fortified position was eliminated.

“When, an hour later, the pain from his wound became so intense that he was no longer able to walk, [Wells] established his command post in a position from which to observe the progress of his men and continued to control their attack by means of messengers,” according to his citation. The engagement gained his platoon the distinction as the most decorated platoon to fight in a single engagement in the history of the Marine Corps.
RIP to a real American hero.

I see all the stories of families in the middle east and Africa who constantly live in fear for their lives, and I'm thankful I don't have that fear for my kids. It's because of men like this.

God bless

A truly brave American hero like hundreds of thousands of others from that era.

But let's put things in perspective about the decision to wage war.

Over half the civilized world had been invaded and over run by Germany, Italy, and Japan

and we still sat back on the sidelines waiting to see if Britain was going to fall

without getting involved.

Now Obama gets criticized by republicans in the debates for not sending in ground troops when ISIS overruns some village in the middle of the desert in Iraq that no one has ever heard of.

We do all realize how much more aggressive we are to jump into a ground conflict with our sons and daughters then we were 70 years ago don't we?

Don't get the greatest generation thing.

I agree with the post and never thought about it but possibly the sentiment to jump in when truly need be rather than at every opportunity. They fought a necessary battle, unlike our unnecessary Iraq adventure.

A) we were anything but on the sidelines prior to our entrance into ww2

B) there are a multitude of reasons as to why we didn't officially join the war prior to 1941

My mom's first cousin. He grew up in Baton Rouge and went to Catholic High. PFC. HARRYDALE HYDE
PLATOON COMPANY A
1ST BATTALION
27TH MARINES
5TH MARINE DIVISION

KILLED FEBRUARY 28, 1945, he was 19 years old,
ON MT. SURIBACHI, IWO JIMA
HE DID RECEIVED THE SILVER STAR FOR VOLUNTEERING TO CLIMB TWO PIL BOXES 20 FEET, AND KNOCK THEM OUT.

By on the sidelines I meant we didn't declare war and engage our own troops in battle. Was that not obvious to you aggie?

Of course we were supplying Great Britain, but they went up against Germany for over a year and came within a whisper of being conquered while we didn't come to their aid militarily with troops. Not to mention our other "allies" like France, Belguim, etc. that were conquered and we didn't engage.

A lot of our private supply ships were sunk by U-boats trying to get to Great Britain and yet we still didn't declare war on Germany.

We are a lot more hawkish these last 40 years than we were back in the 30's and 40's.

Evidently not hawkish enough for many republicans.

Wow! That's something to remember in your family. I got to hold the bloody bible that my uncle (82nd Airborne) had on him when he was killed in the Battle of The Bulge in Germany. His unit had been decimated, and his CO was killed. He was given a field command and led his unit on a raid into a village to take out a group of snipers. He got hit between the eyes and never knew what hit him. He received the Silver Star and my one of my other uncles has this. Holding that bloody Bible was a real emotional moment and made me cry, I can't lie.

I will say this about that generation though. They only fought wars and sacrificed our best and bravest when it was absolutely necessary.

Not when some defense lobbyist lets his republican puppet know that weapons inventories are starting to get a little high and we don't want it to affect stock price.

do you understand that saying we are on the sidelines and saying that we didn't commit our troops to battle is like completely different?
quote:

while we didn't come to their aid militarily with troops
all we did is keep them from falling apart by repairing their ships in our ports, supplying volunteers to fight in the RAF, and by supplying them with tanks. Should we bring up everything we did for soviet Russia as well? We were 100% in the war

are you really trying to compare 2016 US to 1940 US? Something happened in 1918 and throughout the 30's that completely shaped the nations opinion of the war prior to pearl harbor
