Louisiana could earn as much as $128 million in annual revenue if it were to legalize and tax marijuana, according to a Washington, D.C., think tank's new report.

The Tax Foundation, a nonprofit research organization most often described as conservative and pro-business, based its calculations on current demand for pot in Colorado and Washington, states that have authorized recreational use along with Oregon and Alaska.

It could generate infinite tax dollars and the police union/prison lobby would still be against it.

It's such a no-brainer that it'll never happen.

Then some other nearby state will legalize it, and that added revenue will decrease significantly because LA won't be drawing in as many people from nearby states.

Yeah, because they currently control the market.

I hate when they base these studies on CO's numbers. CO is unique in that it's a weed tourism location that's heavily reliant on prohibition elsewhere.

And would start at the same time as drug testing of welfare recipients... serious

It's the same way here in Kentucky. They had to fight tooth and nail just to grow/sell hemp again because of the Bible beaters that adamantly protest against pot. So instead we give $18 million dollar tax breaks for an Ark amusement park while the state retirement fund goes under.

If Louisiana was the first in the south to legalize it would get that tourism boon too.

If there is any state in the USA that would benefit from legalization, it is Louisiana. Will never happen, when we put people away for decades over a joint.

I took what he said as the Milton Friedman understanding of the war on drugs

quote:

See, if you look at the drug war from a purely economic point of view, the role of the government is to protect the drug cartel. That's literally true

True, but we all know that won't happen.
