An investigation has been launched after a Malaysian Airlines plane appeared to fly in the wrong direction after taking off from New Zealand on Christmas Day.

Flight MH132 usually takes a direct route heading north-west over Australia on its way from Auckland to Kuala Lumpur but radar data showed the aircraft heading south for almost an hour.

The New Zealand Herald reported that the pilot questioned the Airbus A330’s path just eight minutes into the flight, which took off at 2.23am local time.

Apparently the autopilot flew a different flight path than what the captain was expecting, then it took nearly an hour to get it turned around. Computer error? Hacking?

if they offered me $5000 to fly to any destination in the world on that airline I would tell them to get fricked.

Really? I mean, hundreds of MH flights will fly today without incident. I'd gladly take 5k.

autopilot doesn't work that way, pilot still has to manually operate the "tool." This is most likely pilot error having no clue in what they're doing due to lack of training.

Autopilot basically just controls airspeed, altitude, headings, etc. But the pilot still has to continuously update it if that makes sense..

They typed in and connected to the wrong radio frequency.

Same reason that American flight crashed into the mountains in South America a long time ago.

This article is somewhat misleading. From what I see the pilots created a different flight plan than what was the routine route. They did a poor job of communicating and flew the path they wanted. Original flight time: 10:30; new flight plan: 10:16. So they made it faster, they weren't heading straight south or anything.
