This is probably true. It just feels like a rip off to pay $200 for someone to tell me my vision hasn't changed and my eyes are healthy just so I can get contacts.

But an eye exam is like 50 bucks. And like someone else mentioned....contacts can screw up your eyes/cause some nasty infections if not worn properly. Shame on the eye doctor for wanting to make sure the person they prescribed contacts to doesn't have some nasty eye thing because they are improperly wearing their contacts.

There's a difference between the eye doctor wanting to take care of his patients and the law forcing me to give eye doctors business. If I want to take my optical health into my own hands I should be able to do so. I know how to wear my contacts properly and I do so.

Also like I said, other countries don't require prescriptions for purchase, it's not like Brits are all running around with eye infections.

I'm pretty sure most people know when they have an eye infection and you don't go to an optometrist for that anyway. How do you wear contacts improperly?

Sleeping in them all the time for one.

I guess I just don't really think about it. As a woman I've had to see my gyno every year if I want to continue being on birth control so I just see it the same way as that. Never thought "this is so unfair"

I dont go back to the eye doctor. I order from 1-800-contacts and it does take a day or so for them to verify my prescription but I dont have to go back.

I actually picked up some refills today at the Ochsner Optical Shop. I didn't have to go back in for an exam.

I have slept in my contacts regularly for 10+ years with no issues/infections, no changes to my prescription, and no changes to the shape of my eye. Since the J&J lawsuit many years ago, I also use lenses much longer than directed, also with no issues.

The family practitioner doesn't call the patient or bring him in to make sure he took the prescribed medicine correctly or is using a CPAP machine correctly. I'm not sure why many are trying to imply that this is the normal course of behavior in the medical community.

Yes but if someone is taking prescribed meds....they don't just renew them every year without you seeing them for an exam(ex: every woman on birth control has to have a gyno exam every year or her birth control prescription isn't renewed).

This doesn't work forever, I used to use 1-800-Contacts as well. Eventually your prescription will expire and 1-800-Contacts will no longer allow you to order until you have a renewed prescription. At the time I desperately needed new contacts ASAP and couldn't get to the eye doctor so that's when I just ordered from the UK.

CPAP's are prescribed. The doctor doesn't bring a patient in before that person is allowed to buy filters for it.

Dr Charles Williamson did mine almost 10 years ago. No complaints.

This isn't just fear mongering, eye infections from contact lens misuse are real and your eye sight isn't something you want to frick with. There are different types of contacts of course and some might let you sleep in them, but in general you shouldn't push it. I sleep with mine in only if I'm crashing at someone else's house randomly or something. I don't replace mine every month like I'm supposed to, but I definitely take them out nightly.

I have no idea what your son takes chronically, and I have no need to know it. I'm talking about things that are prescribed that are common like: contacts, prenatal vitamins, laxatives, antibiotics, CPAP machines, crutches, braces, etc. These are items where the use is standard, the risk is low, and there aren't compelling reasons for follow up visits. If contacts are dangerous and the risks are great from improper wear, I would expect that one visit per year would not be sufficient to mitigate that risk.

why not just wear glasses?

Overwearing contacts can cause corneal neovasculariztion. LINK . In almost all cases I've seen, the patient was not aware any damage was being done. If folks can't afford a corneal check once a year, maybe they should just wear glasses instead.

The better question is why should eye health professionals be coercing people to get their eyes checked when no other health professionals do that? Why are EHP so much more interventionist than professionals in other specialties?

I don't mind getting an eye exam every year. It's reassuring to me that my eyes are still ok. And actually...the last few visits my prescription had been changed (I'm just a lil near sighted so contacts/glasses aren't mandatory for me to see like some ..they just make my vision better).
