Damn that's crazy. I've skied that area and like others have said it filters down into a pretty congested valley.

One person who literally saw it happen told me they saw at least five people disappear under the snow, and only one came up.

What is with the gratuitous use of the word “literally”? No shite he “literally” saw it. How else can one see something?

I like how articles won't spell out "Squaw", likes it's the N word.

A few hundred people may be buried alive, but it's not going to get in the way of prioritizing this inane woke silliness.

Major avalanche

That has to be one of the worst ways to go.

It's now used to differentiate someone who physically watched something vs someone who was there but only filmed it vertically for the gram while not really paying attention and will watch it later to see what happened.

I would have expected dogs among those rescuers.

They are now saying one dead, three injured and the search is over.

Why would somebody get fired? It’s skiing and all know that a slide is possible.

Just driving to the resort can be dangerous enough. Try going over Monarch Pass, I've seen some wild stuff there.

Its a slab avalanche from new snow on older snow base, there is no glacier on KT, this was from a heavy snow fall and wind loading.

That was my thought as well, I know you're essentially taking on injury risk with your lift ticket, but this is something that a reasonable person would expect them to have known about and mitigated.

people die at resorts all the time, mostly from hitting trees from being out of control, or a heart attack. One guy died in a small slide and we skied over him all season till he melted out and was right in the run.

yes of course, but wind loading can be so extreme that it can create a slab condition in a few minutes. Patrol can control an entire mountain but by the time they are on one side, the other side, yet controlled, has been exposed to a myriad of weather phenomena.

Damn - just watched "Buried" on Netflix. A documentary about the Alpine Meadows avalanche in 1982. Squaw Valley is not that far from Alpine Meadows.

I watched that about 2 weeks ago as well. Very very good film.

Me too. When I first saw the post my first thought was he was talking about it. Dang.
