Damn I lived there from 95-99. My favorite mountain in the world. A guy is started with as a lowly ticket taker is still there, VP of something. Bet he's having a long day.
I've been caught in an avalanche. Not completely buried, arms and head were free. Do not recommend
ETA - seeing they had wind gusts of 155 mph. Someone might lose their job for that, that lift shouldn't have been spinning. Squaw is notorious for shutting down for "Wind Hold", there's even stickers that joke about it. Seems like a bad call

yes of course, but wind loading can be so extreme that it can create a slab condition in a few minutes

This area "literally" never melted from last year so it was already built up pretty good.

Why would somebody get fired? It’s skiing and all know that a slide is possible.

It’s skiing in-bounds at a major resort. Depending on the layer makeup they dynamite those areas to prevent slides like this from happening. Out of bounds and you’re on your own.

Its a slab avalanche from new snow on older snow base, there is no glacier on KT, this was from a heavy snow fall and wind loading.

If this is true there will be job losses and legal settlements.

Damn - just watched "Buried" on Netflix. A documentary about the Alpine Meadows avalanche in 1982. Squaw Valley is not that far from Alpine Meadows. Hope they're able to find everyone in time, if they're trapped.

Me too. When I first saw the post my first thought was he was talking about it. Dang.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are only a mile apart from each other.

Probably under pressure to get people on the mountain. Hasn't the snow been late/light this year in the Sierras?

I don’t know much about ski law, but it seems like you’re kinda skiing at your own risk.

I realize they have people to groom lines and check for avalanches but you’re still out in nature.

I had a pass to Squaw Valley when I lived out there a decade or so ago.

Could have been me.

I don't think they hit those type winds today. The peak is certainly capable of it, having hit 160mph before, but I can't find anything even remotely close to those type numbers today on any weather station in the area.

I was wearing my SV jacket today. Enjoyed skiing there last time I went.

I'm amazed this doesn't happen more often

It does happen pretty often, there was another one at this resort on other side of the mountain killing one in 2017 then again on this side of the mountain killing another in 2020

True, but when you ski in bounds at a ski area you assume that the terrain they open is safe to access. There are reasons places within the ski area are open and closed. Seems like someone in snow safety made a critical error.

And FWIW, I worked in the ski industry for close to 20 years....

Would think people who ski in areas like this would have some sort of oxygen tank to keep them alive for a few minutes. Was in a small one in Japan, they don't have high altitude mountains like we have, thank goodness.
