BTW anyone have any opinions on the Certified Apple Refurbished Laptops you can buy on their web site?

Just got one. Only have had it a few days. Can't distinguish from new. I guess there are always bad apples, but my decision was based on the multiple folks who are running 7 yr old Macs and still run like new. Don't get that from a PC really.

I get that pretty consistently out of my non-Apple machines. You don't see that out of cheaper machines that people don't take care of.

You paid $3,400 for a laptop and didn't get Apple Care?

ETA: Have you even brought it in? The closer to the warranty date you bring it in, the more likely they'll still fix it. Especially on such an expensive model

To be honest its the first Mac I've ever owned and all I've heard was how they last seemingly forever.

Ill have to check to see if I even opted for apple care, tbh I'm in too much shock to even recall. It seriously makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

I'll go both hands down on an upper end, business class Lenovo, HP Elitebook, or similar since this guy only puts one hand down on his MacBook.
Compare oranges to oranges. when you buy comparably-priced Windows machines, they almost always out-spec their Apple-made counterpart, they're more familiar to the typical user, and, in my experience, more versatile machines by a pretty fair margin. I don't care for my MacBook very much at all. It's relegated to specific-activity use 90+% of the time and doesn't really achieve that at as high a rate as I would like. I will almost definitely not buy another Apple computer based on my experience. For all I hear and read about hardware, it was "meh" at best and has had MORE serious hardware failures than my 7 year old Gateway laptop. And an equal number of hardware failures to that laptop + a 9 year old Sony desktop.

This is funny since they really don't use any different parts from PC's

I always assumed people were talking about their actual Apple-made parts. To that extent: My trackpad blows on this particular model. The screen isn't any prettier than any x768 display I've come across. The keyboard is rather less responsive than any I have owned.

Plus: if does have a full-size FireWire 400 port support Power over FireWire.

ETA: that's really a Foxconn credit though.

HO-LEE-shite. Nice to meet you Doc, someone that finally gets it.

For the record, I've NEVER had a virus on my laptop, and I routinely have kept them 3-5 years each time. My Latitude 6540 is a nice piece of equipment that is fully compatible with everything I do.

Don't run IE and don't open bullshite email attachments from people you don't know and you'll likely never get a virus or malware. Don't install every fricking MP3 stealing software that comes along and your machine will likely never slow down.

I have never had a virus on any computer.

And the Macs don't get viruses thing is utter bullshite.

Yep, found Malware just the other day. Some sort of extension that had added itself to Safari. It would attach a handful of URL's to every outgoing email message that was posted to an Exchange OWA server using Safari. Took a while to figure out why every email this guy sent to users behind a Barracuda Spam Firewall would be rejected. The X-Barracuda headers pointed to URLs for titty sites and gambling sites that the user had no idea was there. Im not certain how this was an exploit and what the payload would really be, but it definitely caused all of his Exchange usage to grind to a halt.

Safari is the most insecure browser out there.

That's an odd one indeed. Must be either someone who's bored, sites that specifically generate revenue based on hits/searches regardless of whether the traffic viewed the banners/ads, or someone trying to up some sort of hits/search-type traffic number discretely for some other sort of marketing gain. I guess the old motto holds true: "you really can't trust the guy who runs a titty site."
That motto is approximately 15 seconds old.

Update - Went with the Macbook Air with Apple care for her. 8 GB of RAM and 256 flash memory. Turns out a I get a pretty sizeable discount through work on em, picked up an external hard drive (we want this for a back up, case, and and the super drive with the savings.

Anything else I should get her to go with it?

Should show up this weekend.

Thank you all for your opinions.

I actually don't know specifics here, but make sure the drive is "Time machine compatible." Is that universal, or does it need the Apple Stamp of Appoval (directed to anyone that knows. Maybe colorchangingtiger, since he's usually more on top of Apple/non-apple compatibility than most.)?

Otherwise, you look set.

Yes sir, apple compatible. Thanks for the tip!

I do appreciate the commentary, what sold me on the MAC was multiple buddies telling me that their wives have not been able to screw them up (yet)

It's true for me at least, mine hasn't managed it since I bought her one 3 years ago. No failures either. My build on the gaming board proves I have no issue buying decent stuff for a PC, but my wife is completely illiterate with no interest in learning. I got sick of playing IT everyday, this has solved that. She has learned to do things on it far beyond her skill on a windows computer without any assistance from me.

I don't think a drive has to be time machine compatible, but I just use standard WD drives for the most part.

Pretty sure it's universal. I use WD MyPassport drives for Time Machine. FYI, you probably want to do something like a super duper clone of the drive periodically as well. Time Machine should not be your only back up. It's still too buggy to trust IMO, and since it's been around for 4(?) years now it doesn't seem like they are in a big rush to fix it. It does work well for single file retrieval if you happen to accidentally delete something.
