For her work helping to detect gravitational waves, the ripples that Albert Einstein predicted a century ago in the space-time fabric, LSU professor Gabriela Gonzalez has been named one of 100 Leading Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine. The experimental physicist, also named Scientist of the Year by Great Minds in STEM, is part of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration that operates twin observatories in Livingston Parish and Hanford, Wash.

Working at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, this team of scientists announced in February it had heard and recorded the collision of two black holes. Scientists likened the world's first direct observation of gravitational waves to the moment Galileo peered through a telescope to look at the planets.

"What's been achieved by LIGO, particularly in a relatively short space of time, is truly incredible," said editor Hamish Johnston of Physics World, which on Monday (Dec. 12) declared the discovery as its 2016 Breakthrough of the Year. "The observations it has made are the first direct evidence of black holes, so LIGO has already changed our view of the universe."

While I think the publication that came out with the list is a liberal echo chamber, it's great to see someone from LSU recognized for their important work with science.

Can you imagine the cognitive dissonance in the OP and his ilk if it comes out she believes in AGW or similar?

They have made some pretty amazing discoveries there lately. There are some very smart people working there from all over the world

Wtf does this have to do with anything?

Just more liberal bullshite about "women" and "science" and a whole bunch of other shite they just make up to waste my money.

Don't be fooled folks. This is not what they're doing at that facility. My BIL went there on a fieldtrip with his daughter. He knows alot about physics and stuff and he said they're working on some sinister stuff. He even saw a pentagram on one of the desks.

The funny part is this will be promoted by LSU as a professor you could study under.

I doubt she has much classroom time.

Yawn exactly.

It was only a matter of time until the "right"/science deniers started attacking Einstein and his mere THEORY of gravity/relativity and gave poor Darwin and his THEORY of evolution by natural selection a reprieve.

Those physicists are the real enemy, give biologists a break.

Edit: I know what I said really doesn't have much to do with what the OP said, but I wanted to have some fun.

I'm sure she takes graduate students, which is much more prestigious for the university than teaching undergraduate courses.

I know of two astrophysicists who work there, who do not teach. They work very long hours every day (typically 13-15). Both have PhD, so maybe they did a little teaching during school

Pretty wild something like that is in Livingston though. You can discover black holes and score meth within a mile radius
