The way finances work at the university are very much like government. Got to spend the money to show that you need the money. That's why we end up with so much stupid crap that isn't really needed.

Has ZERO to do with the topic at hand.

I was just pointing out that LSU allocates money to things and they are stuck in that fund. Then the people feel they need to spend it on ridiculous stuff. Doesn't directly correlate to this, but I've worked with facility services and seen money get blown.

This vote may have happened in 2011, but I graduated in 2010 and there were discussions of serious financial issues back then. The vote came when we already had budget cuts looming over our heads.

quote:

Why? The fee was created for this purpose and approved by the students who paid it. Bitching about it because it coincides with a budget crisis is silly

Nowhere did I say we should take this money and use it elsewhere. It was voted on and is being used as it was intended. I only say that it's ridiculous to have this as a topic while we are having a budget crisis as the money could have been used elsewhere. I know that's not what is going through a student's head, but there are very useful places we could have allocated money. It's going to be harder to do when there are now other fees racking up on a fee bill. I never said that after the vote, they should have taken it to be used elsewhere. Other's seem to think that's what I'm saying. I'm just saying that the direction the spending went wasn't what I think is the best for the university.

quote:

The students voted for it. The students pay it. What exactly is the problem?

And that's the end of it. I never said it should be overturned. I am only saying that I disagree with the vote. People can state all the reasons it's good for the university, but I just think there are better options out there and now that this passed, it's going to be more difficult to fund them.

That's government everywhere for you. Better accounting and budgeting would solve a lot of that, but that's a TON of labor and effort to do statewide.

No, it couldn't have - that's the point. The only reason the money was raised is for the explicit purpose that the students voted for it. I guarantee the students would not have voted for a fee to augment the university general budget. The money raised only exists because of the prospect of the pool.

Fair enough

I'm speaking in more of a round about way that by adding this fee (although it was voted for), it will make it more difficult to add any other fee to improve the university. Not saying the money would automatically be used for something else. But it's going to be hard to add any other money, be it on tuition or extra fees, without affecting enrollment. These fees stack up quickly, no need to add things that aren't important (in my opinion at least)

where is the money coming from? How much does that pool costs? With budget cuts coming, may not be the best thing to spend six figures on.

Hate to break it to you but the majority of students disagree with you. Some peoples health is more important than the age of the desk/building that they are in. The majority of the students supported putting more of their money into the rec, which anyone that uses it will tell you is much needed. People value different things and apparently you are in the minority.

I got more out of the Urec during my time at lsu than I go from any English class. Money well spent (and as intended). Prof is just being salty.

By increasing fee bills to help the rec center, you take away from the ability to increase fee bills to help the school in general.

How?

No one is going to use the pool because you won't be able to bring alcohol.

Thank god they're renovating/expanding the rec though. It's an embarrassment to LSU.

I don't like this plan because public pools are trashy

lsu might as well build a mall of cortana with that money

I'm just seeing this. I realize that the 8 figure costs come from its own funding source, but, damn, this looks horrible. This will be used as a bludgeon and public concern for LSU's budget will plummet.

Ultimately it doesn't matter where the funds come from. When you're screaming that you're going to close, people expect that you are financially bone dry. They expect that the 80 million for this could be redirected. They consider that if students can afford these fees for frivolity, they can manage a larger tuition increase.

Looks like you should have paid more attention in your English classes.
