Gov. John Bel Edwards will require thousands of non-working, childless adults who receive food stamps to participate in job search and skills training programs to continue getting the assistance.

The Democratic governor's executive order, issued Thursday (April 21), starts the requirement July 1. It comes as Republican lawmakers have pushed for work requirements, which have bumped thousands off food stamps in other states.

quote:

For 19 years, Louisiana has had a federal waiver of requirements that childless adults ages 18 to 49 have a job or be enrolled in job training programs to receive food stamps.

Edwards got federal approval this year to keep the waiver — but said he would couple that with bolstered job training and placement efforts.

Get rid of that waiver and make the deadbeats do something.

So we're going to set money on fire training these people for jobs they will never do?

Remember when he sought the waiver because he wanted to make sure we had the job training programs in place so the people could actually comply with the rules and everyone freaked the frick out?

I wonder how many Facebook rants I'll see about this news.

Government provided job search and skills training programs paid for by tax payers.

Don't be fooled by JBE's food stamp changes. This is expansion of government payed for by taxes. Not a single person will be pulled from the food stamp program, they just have to do a bit more paperwork.

What % of people on food stamps out there are in that age range and childless? 1%? Also, this gives them even more of an incentive to have kids. This is the dumbest idea I have ever heard of.

So what does that come to, 1% of the recipients?

About 47,000 food stamp recipients are estimated to be affected by Thursday's order.

I'd be willing to bet that the number of LA adults on welfare that are childless is hovering around the 0% range.

Childless?

Yeah, that's gonna help a lot.

Won't that just be more encouragement to have a kid?

A Dem Governor isn't going to truly reform welfare or drug test welfare recipients. This is a good first step but we obviously need more reform than just this.

You shouldn't oppose legislation just because it only fixes 75% of the problem. Fix the 75% then start working on the next 25%

I don't care if they do drugs as long as they pay taxes.

It sounds like he just extended a program that was already there for 19 years

If, for some reason, you decided to exempt those who have children, why not at least confine it to children who are not of school age? If the kids are k-12, why would the parents be justified in being unemployed?

C'mon man, everyone knows that it is impossible to have children AND a job!

Who in the world could pull off that witchcraft?
