Maybe so, but higher level ed is one of few things not protected by state law. It usually sees cuts first

Good God, I already covered this like 1000 times. This is a falsehood.

They can cut whatever they want in the budget for the up-coming fiscal year. Why are people on this board so determined to be misinformed? That state law only applies to when the governor makes mid-year budget cuts without legislative approval.

For example, if you can't get into ULL you would go to ULM for two years and either get a two-year degree or transfer to Lafayette

Maybe UL-Lafayette can feed students into UNO and ULM.

Not a huge fan of Nicholls although I'm an alum. I wish I would have gone elsewhere, but I was young and wanted to stay close to home.

That said if you get rid of Nicholls you basically screw over 5 parishes. The majority of teachers from Lafourche, Terrebonne, St Mary, Assumption, St James went to Nicholls as well as area nurses. No Nicholls = even bigger teacher shortage in these areas than there already is. There's not many people from outside parishes beating down the doors to move down the bayou to teach. Nicholls also provides a number of chemist & petroleum engineers to the local oil industry, and it's not bad to have Nicholls pumping out business majors in an area that has the lowest unemployment in the state, and a booming economy which just ranked 18th in the nation for small cities.

You could say well those people could just go to college elsewhere. Where? Nicholls isn't called a commuter college for no reason. The majority of people that go to Nicholls live at home and aren't going to leave the bayou, nor will they drive from the lower ends of the parishes to New Orleans or Lafayette everyday to go to school. Plus many in the Education & Nursing program are working adult Re-Entry students that got crap degrees at those bigger schools and now need a degree in a field that actually has job perspectives.

Besides what makes McNeese so special? Acording to US News Rankings McNesse, Nicholls, and Northwestern are all ranked dead even. Both have an even better graduation rate at 21% for Northwestern & 19% for Nicholls, compared to 13% for McNesse.

US News College Rankings

All three of those schools should stay open because they educate students that wouldn't be educated otherwise, schools in the cities with other viable options around them are the schools that should be cut if any.

Does Bobby Jindal think that if he completely destroys Louisiana, the rest of the US will be so thankful to have gotten rid of us that they'll elect him benevolent dictator for life or something?

Yes because this is all his doing, right? Nothing else is involved.
The thought of you voting is scary.

Hey brah!

As he points out, the importance of the smaller regional colleges is that they educate kids who might not otherwise be able to go to college. They can work, continue to live w their parents, go to night school, etc, at a regional college, but can't take 4 years off of their lives to go to LSU or LaTech.

There is certainly room for improvement in some of those schools, as there is waste in every area of government. The whole system is down $700 million already. Ultimately, it will take a decade or more to recover from the cuts that Jindal has implemented, in his quixotic quest to be President.

Interesting. I wonder who's on the chopping block. Can't imagine McNeese, but Nichols wouldn't surprise me. Probably get rid of LSUA and plenty of vo tech schools.

Most of the budget shortfall has nothing to do with oil prices. They announced a 1.4 billion dollar shortfall back in early November when oil was close to $80. State budgets for $86.

Is this true? What did they do for the period of time between the early 80s and about 5 years ago when oil was less than $50/barrel?
