Which State agency handles complaints with companies like Century Link and other telecom companies. I know it's an elected official but I can't remember the name.

It's under jurisdiction of the Public Service Commission. But, they don't do much good with telecom except for landline telephone service.

Yea someone stole a landline from my parents business. They're trying to college insurance deductibles. The service provider told us just to get fricked. I have had good success calling the rep in the past but drew a blank on who it was.

How do you steal a landline?

For a stolen landline? How much does a stolen landline cost?

For what? You trying to get money from them to pay your insurance deductible?

People are calling flood victims asking for the deductible. They are using our phone number. I don't know why "college" came up, this Google keyboard messes with me sometimes

By using your phone number, are you saying the Caller ID is your number? Or are you saying that number no longer rings at your business?

If it's the Caller ID, they are just spoofing your Caller ID, not stealing your phone line.

This is what's happening. Is the phone company correct in telling me there is nothing that can be done?

There are things that can be done but it requires a lot of legwork

Engineers can go into the telephone company's switch log, search for the destination number and find the sender's carrier as well as the "Billing Telephone Number" which is usually the correct (not spoofed) # of origin

It's a lot of work with hardly any payoff as the crooks are most likely using burner phones or some service like Vonage paid via disposable prepaid debit cards

Unfortunately, they are correct in telling you to kick rocks

Thanks, man. It's been happening for a little over a week now. If you walk into the office, the phone barely stops ringing with people calling back the number. A lot of them know it's a scam but now they think we are the ones trying to scam them. It's a real clusterfrick and they must have called 20k plus people to get this kind of response rate.

Seems like -- with all of the Perry Mason / Alexander Shunarrah types we have on this board, and given that this crap appears to be affecting 100% of the population -- some enterprising legal mind could create a massively-profitable class-action case against one or more spammers.

If they could ever find them, of course.

True, but the issue is that you don't know which carrier the "spoofer" is using so you don't know which carrier to call and have them check.

So someone is spoofing your parents number to try and collect fraud money? Report it to the police, but there isn't anything they can do.

These calls come from overseas via IP and usually cross multiple carriers and are not traceable. There isn't much you can do.

Most somewhat telecom savvy people can spoof numbers pretty easily. Not much you can do, unless it's a trackable legit business doing it.
