At least according to the presentation given to the metro council last night by the DOTD project officials over the project.

Best case scenario, an 18% reduction in travel time.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation's Interstate 10 widening project is set to begin its five-year construction process soon, a controversial process that has been years in the making.

DOTD project officials gave a presentation Wednesday night before the East Baton Rouge Metro Council, providing insight into how the construction will create a new fourth lane on each side of I-10 from west of the Washington Street exit to east of the Acadian Thruway exit.

The project will be handled in five stages, with traffic lanes being shifted and redirected at each stage, Sherri LeBas, project consultant and senior vice president of contractor Gulf Engineers and Consultants, told the council.

quote:

By the end of 2028, the widening project will be complete with four lanes of traffic in each direction of I-10.

Presenters said these changes will reduce travel times by 2% to 18% during peak travel times from the Mississippi River Bridge to the I-10/I-12 split

What if they have to evacuate for a hurricane anytime from 2025 to 2028?
It will be next to impossible to do.

My guess is that 2% is the top end improvement and that the overall change is negative. Because Louisiana.

Just in time to be outdated…

Last time I went through BR, that west bound 2 lane I-10 “temporary” bottleneck into I-12 didn’t even look close to being finished. That was last March.

Like every other interstate project done in the past 30 years. No foresight at all

That's because the original analysis and design is probably 20 years old. We're so quick to keep up with the times

If people crossing the bridge only see 2% I’ll be shocked. The extra lane is huge for them

You know what would help for much cheaper. Stop 18 wheelers from trying to get all the way to the left lane between Washington and Acadian. They all think they need to be in the left lane to go to I12 and then can't keep up with traffic.

Can put up signs, but it would be impossible to enforce in a sustainable way.

But I agree, hypothetically, if this behavior changed it would help a ton. It's not just 18 wheelers. Maybe they put lane divider walls to keep people to the right for a little while, idk.

Airline Highway should be a straight-shot, no stoplight bypass from 190 to i12 that bypasses the city. A majority of our traffic comes from big trucks, and a majority of the big trucks go through our city only to continue on to i-12.

18 wheelers travelling from west on i-10 can take one of a number of routes from i10 to 190, use the old bridge, hit Airline Highway, and be at i-12 in 20 minutes.

This will never happen though, because it would be too cost-prohibitive. The quality of life increase would be monumental though.

It doesn't sound like a lot but you put that together with the 14 cents you saved a couple of July 4ths ago and you start talking about some real improvement.

If it is a new project the best case scenario of time saved when finished will take about 30 million years to offset the time lost while the work is going on...

its already technically illegal to drive in left lane. Cops just need to enforce the law. Problem solved. But that requires effort and extra cops.....ain't gonna happen.
