Merkur, feather blades, and a badger brush. All you need

I find brushes to be kind of useless without some type of cream or soap.

To start with, I highly recommend the soap as well

Go Poraso for the soap....maybe Col Conk's almond for special occasions.

Feather blades.
Merkur long handle.

Proraso shaving cream is the best to use, but if you want to save some money just buy the C.O. Bigelow shaving cream from Bath and Body Works. It's the exact same thing as Proraso, even made by Proraso, just sold under a different name for Bath and Body Works.
It's cheaper than Proraso, and they often have a buy 2 get one free offer. 3 tubes will last you a pretty long time.

Just what I need. Another expensive way to do something simple.

haven't switched to safety razor yet, still using a Shick 5 blade, but I do use soap and a boar brush now.

I still break out a Schick hydro every now and then. Always use the good soap now.

OP I started with an Edwin Jagger 89 lbl. The handle DOES get slick though.

As is mentioned you can spend just as much if not careful. Buying new handles and 10 different brushes.

I would also suggest ebay and a Gillette Tech. There are a million of them out there. Under 20 bucks. Unless you buy mint or still in box. I have a "no date code" tech. Which means it was produced between 1946-1950. Just cool to know I'm shaving with something 60 years old.

That's if you want to take time to disinfect razor.

Cheaper in the long run. For what a person spends at costco for a pack of Fusion blades. I can go on ebay and buy an antique handle that can be used for the rest of mine and my sons lives.

But if you become a "hobbyist" with it? It can become more expensive.

Update. I went Merkur. I love it. It took me a while to get used to it, but now I am finally comfortable shaving around my chin scar for the first time in my life. And I am baby smooth. Definitely had plenty of blood and razor burn the first week, but once my arm and brain were on the same page about letting the razor do the work, it was smooth sailing.
