I have found a pup I am interested in but the mother tested positive for both the Von willibrand gene and Dilated cardiomyopathy while the stud tested negative for both. Do any of you know if these genes are dominant or recessive? Should I pass on this pup and look for another?

That is a ridiculous comment. I want a purebred dog that I can get as a puppy so that I can train it to perform the way that I want it to perform. I also want a dog from an established breed so that the factors that determine its personality are more predictable. I admire people who adopt dogs and have done so myself in the past but at this point I want a Doberman that I can buy as a puppy.

whenever you find one, don't forget a salt lick for it.

my neighbor has a golden lab, licks my hand all the time...folks forget, not just farm animals crave salt, the dogs do too...and will likely live longer with, than without

Try Southern Pride in Madison, although not sure if still breeding:

* SOUTHERN PRIDE
o Rebecca Floyd
o Madison MS
o 601-856-2558

Also, check out the forums on dobermantalk.com and gentledoberman.com

Remember, you get what you pay for, you might not want to isolate yourself to an in state search.

a guy I knew had two red Dobermans, such pretty dogs.

Big and slender too. I know he drove all the way to Alabama to get them.

There is a lady in Lafayette who has Doberman lab mixes. I think the ol lab jumped the fence, oops. She only want $100 for them. We are just trying to decide if we want another dog.

I'm looking for one too. There is a breeder in Deville, LA that has some good looking dogs and it's close to my home. Check out ladobies.net

Lady in Ms. has some ckc reg on br craigslist pets.
Just an FYI. Not looking to start the whole "Don't buy a dog from breeders on craiglist" shitstorm.

Be careful, web research does not report favorably for them. Just looking at the site, looks like a lack of health testing and the prices are super low for most reputable breeders.

From what I have read ckc is a registration association employed by puppy farms as it does not require the testing that akc does. Doberman's are prone to several severe health issues and you want to avoid dogs with them.

Got Atticus about 2 years ago. Here is a picture and a link to the people I got him from. Good price, like $700, and he is a great dog!
Good luck.

Live in Ga and got my dobie from a breeder in Tenn who is also a veterinarian. There were closer options but they were backyard breeder types or pseudo puppy mills. Jack is 8.5 years old, never had any health issues and a great family dog ( gentle, loving but protective). Take your time in finding the right breeder/puppy.

Speaking from experience, I can say Dobermans are great family dogs, very smart, gentle, and fun. They get a bad rap from movies and TV shows, but not from news stories like pit bulls. Good luck.
