Locking your vehicle door is dumb.

Anyone that lives in a “real” high crime area knows this. I grew up in a fairly affluent area closest to downtown Jackson, MS (if there is such a thing). I’ve learned much about race relations, dealing with people, and mostly “rich people” street smarts, although, despite having attended private school at a severe financial hit to my parents, I’m quite average, financially, as are my parents.
We have had vagrants live, unbeknownst to us, in a detached garage, and only discovered their existence because one got sloppy or too drunk and his/her chair fell through the attic space through the garage area after a chair mishap one night.
Jackson is obviously horrible, but let’s talk about locking your vehicle door. In my experience, it’s been best to take all valuables out of the vehicle and leave it unlocked as compared to locking the door.
Reasoning: if a crackhead or intent criminal stumbles upon your vehicle and suspects something valuable is inside, and doors are locked…your window is fricked no matter what and will get smashed. If you keep your doors unlocked and no valuables in the vehicle, there is nothing to lose. Rummage around all you want and take napkins and receipts…you aren’t getting anything of significant value unless you steal the vehicle. Lock those doors and you risk paying for a broken window (probably $300 now minimum) plus your false sense of security property you left in the vehicle. If they really want your vehicle, they are going to take it no matter what.
In my 39 years of life, I’ve had my vehicle rummaged through a handful of times with no broken windows and no stolen vehicles. A few missing CD’s maybe, but that’s the worst if it.
For us high crime dwellers, is this accepted at this point?

How about live in a better neighborhood? Ever consider that?

Strong disagree. Recently there have been groups of car thieves all over the country who canvas neighborhoods checking for unlocked cars. They simply walk away from every locked door. The correct message is the exact opposite of your thread. Lock your doors and you are no longer the easy target.

Locked the doors all my life and never had a window broken

Go park your car at a gas busy gas station in current day Jackson and leave it unlocked for a couple days gramps. Report back.

If you choose to live in a high crime area when you have the means to live elsewhere and then adopt an attitude of well this is just how it is, you deserve everything that happens to you.

So what are they going to steal if there is nothing of value in the vehicle?
Posted on 1/24/22 at 10:59 pm to Shamoan
I don’t lock my doors and I keep nothing in my car. Nothing against door locking.. I’m just lazy.

I do live in a much better neighborhood. My parents REFUSE to move from the crime ridden neighborhood

The vehicle.
Numbnuts.

It may vary from city to city, but around Shreveport, they’re mostly looking for crimes of opportunity. You don’t hear about shattered windows, you just hear about cars that were left unlocked, so much so, that one of our councilmen tried to pass an ordinance that if you had a weapon stolen and your car was unlocked, then you were fined. It ultimately ended up not passing, but his intent was to get people in the habit of locking their doors.
I didn’t really agree with his method, but it’s not that difficult to click your key fob when you get out of the car, or before you go to bed.

My vehicles are in my garage and have nothing of value in them. My car has tempered glass windows. Your message has no effect on me, but it is still not a responsible one.

Sister and her boyfriend from Louisiana visit. They had been dating for 4-5 months. He goes to church with us one of the few weekends he visits and locks his tuck doors. Broke his windows to grab his CD player (probably 15-20 years ago). No immediate family member locks doors and it’s never happened to us ever.

So a piece of glass is going to stop a determined criminal? Should promote you to inspector general. Who knew all it took was a pane of glass!

I lock my home as a buffer to alert me someone is there. If I or any of my family sleep through someone breaking a large panes of glass, I probably deserve to get murdered. We keep valuables inside my home, primarily my family. frick around and find out.

For the same reason, I do not lock my house. They’d just break my windows.
