Step 1: Be a politician
Step 2: Quit or get voted out of office
Step 3: Become a lobbyist

In my experience, plenty are lawyers.

Also some have family in the business so they were brought up learning the ropes from them.

What makes a person want to buy people off for a living?

I know two. Both interned under politicians by being admins/personal assistants. Both went through law school. They still wont disclose how they receive income.

Rule #1 is to buy into the good ole boy system, and never let it go.

All you really need is a client or clients. Registration is $100. No degree needed. Obviously helps to have prior relationships with legislators/elected officials. I've been lobbying in LA for close to a decade.

One of the state's biggest lobbyist lives in Lafayette. He graduated from USL - has no law degree.

Know people

edit: Seriously though, have you ever called, written, or spoken to a legislator regarding a certain position you have? If so, bam you're a lobbyist. If you want to be official, then go down to the Ethics Commission and register.

Not much to it. But you're only an effective lobbyist if you are knowledgeable in your area and know people.

I'm not, but being an attorney with a lot of friends working in politics, I know a handful.

They all took varying paths, but I can give you two examples of a couple of my closer friends (both non-lawyers):

1) Poli sci major. Congressional intern during undergrad, briefly worked on the hill after graduation before being hired on by a southeastern law firm to lobby on state-specific issues. Now working as a deputy CoS on the hill.

2) Business major. Not aware of any internships. Went to work in low level position for local office of US Senator. Worked his way up to LA level. Left to direct the local office of a new congressman. Now regional political director for major special interest group.
