Kinda have a want to just drop everything and move to St Thomas or St John. Anyone here spent a long time down there? Just need to find a job and I think I'm all in.

One of my drivers (summer job) lives there in winter. He does custom van tours or something down there. He's lived there for over 20 years. Tourism is big down there.

Wife and I contemplate doing this at least once a month

Only jobs I can find for me would be management/sales at the resorts.

I've spend some time on St. Croix. There is a definite population of folks who-

I think it'd be cool for a few months, but dealing with it for longer would get on my nerves.

Yeah being a popular tourist location is a con. Got a buddy that's all in on a move too. I seriously think if i could line up something with decent pay I'd make the move.

I have a friend who comes from a wealthy family. Her parents retired young and moved to St. Thomas to start a family. She said she has had enough of the island life and would be perfectly happy if she never had to go back again. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side

Been to both. St. John >>> St. Thomas.

By a huge margin.

If you move there stay busy. I have a lot of friends on St. John and sadly most of them are alcoholics. The biggest hobby there is drinking.

Plan on living in a condo, unless you have at minimum 500k for a home. Utilities are ridiculously expensive. if you are the slightest bit impatient, it might not be the place for you. environment/living wise, its like living in the ghetto but with a tropical environment.

My college roommate did this on St John immediately after college. While he enjoyed it, the cost of living is high and the island got pretty small, pretty fast.

This may be of no concern to you, but an island with somewhat limited resources may not be the best place to raise a family.

While I have never lived in the USVI, I have spent weeks at a time in both St. Thomas and St. Croix for work. There is no way in hell that I would live in St. Croix and only a remote chance that I would live in St. Thomas. It would have to be one hell of a job offer. The beaches are beautiful but everything else about life down there is like living in a third world country. From the cistern water to the electricity tax that prevents people from using air conditioners to the no see ums ( if you think Mosquitos are bad wait to you deal with these things) I just couldn't live there permanently. The other thing is that no one has any kind of sense of urgency to get anything done. Everyone is on island time and when you are trying to get things done it is quite aggravating. And if you are trying to run a business forget about finding any kind of capable labor. Great place to visit I guess but I couldn't live there. I have also spent quite a bit of time in Puerto Rico and I could see myself living there before the USVI.

Had a friend who lived on St. Thomas for two years after getting a job offer. Theres not much job opportunities so his wife had to just get a job as a bartender.

They enjoyed it for a little but but said it got old fast. Huge tree rats climging all in your house, constant bug problems, not being able to flush your toilet except for a few times a day, have to do all your shopping at the one KMart, dealing with tourists all the time were the big drawbacks for them.

They do not recommend it but they also moved from Chicago to there so it was a big life change.

Imagine Treme, Scottlandville, or Central City jammed into a tiny island=St Thomas.

St John much better, but it's tinier and you realize 90% of the population are lazy, generally worthless locals. Another 9% are transplants who aspire to wait tables just enough to fuel their insatiable rum and pot appetites. The remaining 1% are normal people.

My cousin moved down there a few months ago. Haven't heard from him since, so I guess he's doing alright

my sister lived there for about ten years. Did just what the OP wants to do. Said it was great the first year or so, then all the stuff you listed plus some other shite made her and her husband move back to the states. She will tell you its fun for a while, but island living gets old with the quickness.

Don't do it. It really is a great place to visit but I promise you don't want to live there.
