All little league drafts are corrupted. The board members likely lied on their grade sheets. Deals have already been struck among other coaches. You are about to get screwed.

Sorry... but that's how it is in youth sports today.

So just draft the kids you know, get a good range of ages, and go out there and teach them the fundamentals of the game and how to have fun playing baseball. If you know any of the parents are tools, don't draft those kids.

Coaching my son’s Minor B (6-8-year olds) team this year, and it’s my first experience with a player draft

Talked about this weekend at a professional course I attended, the end results are not good, relax let them be kids, one season of baseball per year is enough, stop the overuse injuries

If a kid shows up with $1000 worth of equipment including an evo-shield ankle guard, elbow guard, and two pairs of batting gloves all carried in an embroidered booksack... don't take him. His parents are assholes and unless his mom is single, hot, and is known to sunbathe during games... it isn't worth the hassle.

The kid will wind up playing "travel ball" next season and you won't get to keep him anyway.

If the father of the kid owns any of the items pictured below, don't draft him because the dad will do the coaching from the stands or stand next to the dugout the whole season.

The end of the games get ugly in a hurry if one or both sides lack a battery that can throw the ball to each other - which is one of the main reasons for the OP.

Machine first two innings, kid-pitch after that.

That's too young to be pitching.

I agree, but it's usually only for one inning - maybe two if the game is going fast.

There are no BB or HBP trips to first. Batter hits off a tee if this happens.

If there is one distinct memory I have from my childhood, it was how absolutely, painfully slow these games were.

when i played baseball it was 5 year old tee ball 6-7 year old pitching machine 8 year old kid pitch

you can teach a kid how to hit.

draft the kids with the best arms. little league is all about pitching. at that age, pitch speed is all that matters. 90% of the batters won't be able to catch up with a ball that is thrown hard and straight.

Yes indeed.

OP, you're not among like minded individuals man. There's more serious post in this thread than you want to acknowledge. At that age, your focus should be way way more on teaching and not so competitive. You may be a nice guy but you come off as the kind of coach the good kids parents want to avoid.

At that age, a year or two in age makes a huge difference. Look for kids with higher ratings and Latino last names.

This

After that get kids with parents that can be beneficial to you later on. I had the police chief's son, the kid of a general contractor, an HVAC guy for when my AC went out, and teacher's kids to keep an eye on my son while he was in school. Teachers can meet both quotas which is nice.

Seriously, just get the kids who listen. I'll take the kids who listen any day over the kid with talent who's lazy as shite.

I'm pretty sure there will be two draft pools. First you will draft from the younger group then from the older group. I don't think you'll have to choose a 6 yr old over an 8 year old.

I picked up my sons team the day after the draft so I didn't get to pick. We came two runs shy of being Champions and only lost 3 games that season. When we first started practicing and played our first scrimmage (got clobbered) I thought we were going to be doing it for the love of baseball only. haha

It was through teaching and the kids working hard that we were able to become a decent team.

The bigger thing is your interaction with the parents. You need to set the ground rules with them up front and if they want their kids to make greater improvements they will need to work with them at home.

One of my less experienced kids became one of my best hitters after a light switch came on. He went from batting 7-9 to 1 by second half of the season. You need to make it fun for them while learning. Make games out of the skills you want them to learn.

Overall it was a fun experience especially watching the kids improve and their enjoyment playing the game. I had some great kids and parents.

Good luck

Pick based on skill and how tolerable the parents are. I'd rather lose every game than have a bunch of loser dads yelling at every practice/game
