Coaching my son’s Minor B (6-8-year olds) team this year, and it’s my first experience with a player draft, which is tonight.

I’ve got the kids graded out on throwing, fielding, catching, and hitting. I’m wondering if the overall player scores should be weighted to account for age, and if so, by how much?

Shared experience or advice is welcome.

Draft the ones with the hottest moms and call it a day.

You've got it all backwards and seeing how the draft is tonight your team is screwed. Find the best skilled ethnic kid, make his single mom an assistant coach.

Worry about your draft rankings after that.

At age 6-8, this is good advice. Either that, or just draft by the good parents. Shitty parents make for a long season.

Draft kids that are worse than your son so he can be the star.

Relax man, its 6-8 year olds. Get a couple of kids that show good baseball instincts. Most importantly, research the shite out of the parents on social media. Parents can make or break the experience for everyone. You know what to look for, if the parents look like trash, don't draft the kid. Sorry if that sounds harsh but I've coached my kids for a few years and learned that if the parents are good, then you will have no problem with the kid.

is 5-6's or 7-8's?? Thats a pretty big difference when it comes to the kids who can and who cant catch

The talent gap in that age group is usually so small that you can just pick based on work ethic and attitude and be totally fine.

Watch Bad News Bears. Try to draft a team resembling them.

This! Then begin the negotiations for playing time.

I am relaxed. And I've coached before.

Problem is, I haven't seen the kids. I was approached after tryouts to coach because they had so many kids, they had to add a team. I have the grade sheets of two of the league's board members who ran the tryouts.

I'm not trying to build an all-star team, but I am trying to rate the kids accurately to end up with a competitive team.

Then draft just 8 year olds only.

Your mini Derek Jeter wasn't good enough to get into the Minor A league? Better start training him on an instrument or math.

This. You may get 3-4 guys that can consistently field a ground ball and make a decent throw or catch a pop up at that age if you're lucky. The ones that can hit at that age will rarely get out and the ones that can't hit will rarely put it in play. Assuming machine or coach pitch?

If you know any of the parents, make sure you draft ones that are not going to be questioning your coaching skills and playing time for their kids.

Good luck

Machine first two innings, kid-pitch after that.

I know quite a few (good) parents from previous years' teams, but problem is I don't know their last names.

Appreciate the few serious replies!
