It sure would have been interesting to have already had a thread on this exact same topic, say, yesterday?

LIGO is one of only two facilities of its kind in the US. So yeah, usually any time they make any headway in the detection of gravity waves its a pretty big deal. Proof of general relativity and whatnot.

Just one little snippet:

"This is an immensely delicate experiment: the effect being sought is so tiny that it "shakes" the mirrors through a distance less than a millionth of the size of a single atom. This is why it’s been crucial to have two similar detectors separated by nearly 2,000 miles - one in Washington State, the other in Louisiana - and to seek events that show up in both detectors, thereby ruling out effects caused by local seismic events, passing trucks, and so forth."

Is this going to be one of those discoveries that isn't really a discovery? Modern science seems to really jump the gun on their announcements. They announce something but say they have a lot of work left to prove it. Then later they prove they were wrong but don't announce that. Then people walk around thinking science did things they didn't.

That really is amazing. Could this or a similar but larger event be what's behind the universe coming together instead of expanding as previously believed?

It's about time. We went in high school about 8 years ago and everyone was sitting around drinking coffee all day.
