Actor LeVar Burton was in disbelief after learning he descended from a White Confederate soldier on Tuesday's episode of "Finding Your Roots."

The PBS documentary show uses written ancestries and DNA research to discover the long-lost family histories of prominent guests.

Show host and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. revealed to Burton that his family had harbored a deep secret for generations. The man he thought was his great-great-grandfather was not actually genetically matched to him. His great-grandmother, Mary Sills, was actually descended from a White man named James Henry Dixon.

"Were you expecting that? Did you have any idea you had a White, direct ancestor?" host Gates asked Burton.

Burton was in disbelief at this discovery. "No! No, I had no idea. So Granny was half-White! Wow," he reacted.

Further research into Burton's lineage revealed even more surprising discoveries. His ancestor was born in North Carolina in 1847 and served in the reserve troops in the Confederate army as a teenager. Later on, he fathered a child with an African-American woman born into slavery.

Burton, who famously portrayed a slave in the 1977 TV miniseries, "Roots," was floored to find out his great-great grandfather fought to protect the institution of slavery during America's Civil War.

Are we still on this bullshite?
I'm from the north, descended of 1910s era European immigrants. I have no bias in this issue.

But, do people really believe...
1) war was over solely slavery
2)hundreds of thousands of men in a nation of what 20-30 million would take up arms over slavery?

There's slavery all over middle east, Africa, and Asia nowadays. I don't see anybody taking up arms.

You fought for where you lived. Like 95+% fought for state they lived in. Very few people owned slaves in the South.

Sorry for rambling I'm just tired of people being fricking dumb.

Not that I think LeVar is like this, but I will never not laugh at racist people finding out their lineage contains some of what they hate.

I like the Don Cheadle one.

Guy was so excited to hear about how his ancestors were slaves of Whitey just to find out they were slaves of native Americans. The disappointment on his face was priceless.

I just quoted the story. I know slavery was a big issue that lead to the Civil War, that cannot be denied. But it was not the sole reason for the Civil War, nor was it what motivated the vast majority of Southern men and Northern men who didn’t even own slaves or care anything about it to take up arms.

If I recall correctly from one of the books about Derek Todd Lee’s murders and investigation, it’s something like 20% of the genetic code of blacks descended from slaves is either white or Native American.

There was a lot of interracial action back then, probably more than today.

My Dad's side has has a few African and Native American ancestors starting in the 1800s

Mom's side is pure European blood going as far back as 1600s.

I was in school when Roots came out. I had a black buddy in elementary school whose name was Kim Gay, and we would call him kunta kimgay. He laughed at the time, might not today.
