That's an awesome story, and inspiring motivation from Jeremy Renner. However, frick running. I do jiu jitsu because I needed to get into shape without having to run. If you see me running, you better start running too is all I have to say, because something bad is coming behind me.

Tell you have never been in a crossfit gym without telling me you've never been to a crossfit gym.

I've been going to a crossfit gym for years (I should be in better shape) but have never flipped or even offered to flip a tractor tire. I've also never seen anyone suffer any kind of major injury.

I will submit that I have been a member of two different crossfit gyms that were very well coached and monitored to reduce the ability of members to do something stupid.

I can answer the question for you though, I do it because I am an older dad and I have a 14 year old and a 2 year old. I want to stay active for as long as I can for them.

This is the biggest lie and myth perpetuated by some unknown entity. Ask sports doctors about this, it's categorically false and a legit sports doctor that's up to date with current information will refute this nonsense.

Do you have proof of this? I'd be curious to read it?

My father in law is a retired orthopedic surgeon that specialized in knee replacements, he is a graduate of duke medical school and did his residency at the same place that Dr. Andrews did. He can tell you the story of how Dr. Andrews was fired and left to start his own business, I don't remember it all. Doesn't matter now.

He will absolutely tell you that any endurance training over years and years and years will without a doubt wear your body out. He can tell you endless stories of runners with knee issues.

I'm not saying he is 100% right but he was one of the best in the business for 15-20 years.

There are people who don't think that pavement pounding day after day will eventually cause knee issues? I have several friends who are running and when they hit 50 they started having knee issues.

Why I run is simple: I sleep better and feel better, physically and emotionally, when I do. Pretty easy.

You run because you have unresolved mental health issues.

Running to help improve or maintain mental and emotional health is not running BECAUSE of mental or emotional issues. The same can be said really about any hobby.

People fish, paint, garden, go to the gym, do puzzles, hike, swim and thousands of other hobbies to work towards a healthy lifestyle.

I would add that I like to stay in competition with myself, to be better than I was the previous week, month, year is also one of the driving factors for me. I've got two young kids and being able to run around with them and not get tired, to be able to throw them in the air, to ride the bike with them, is so fulfilling.

Not having the kids wear you out is a big bonus. Like another poster above said, I am an older dad, and staying in shape means I can keep up with my young kids and live longer for them.

As to competition, hitting PR's is mentally and physically rewarding. As is understanding and breaking through plateaus. Instead of binge-watching TV shows and gorging on garbage, I'm busy trying to figure out how to make, and making, my next race faster or my next workout better.

And as to another poster: it is a great stress reliever from a stressful work life. If I go more than two days without a workout, my mood is not great.

We all do.

FTR, not a runner, but I get the same impact from yoga and walking my dog with ear buds in listening to music.

And he couldn't tell you that endurance runners were the majority of his patient base either. It's an easy demographic to remember but they far from make up the most of the orthopedic cases.

Point still stands…why voluntarily beat your knees and ankles into the ground when there are plenty of other ways to stay fit ?

I know.

That post was directed at that individual poster. He could liturallee, ackshually qualify for state-sponsored institutional living.

Good commercial for sure.

Depends on how you define number one. Brooks is number one in running shoe sales because they make boring comfortable shoes that people keep going back to and running stores push. Nike and Adidas still own the podiums and overall performance.

The question is flawed because it implies that you cannot run competitively and not "beat your knees and ankles into the ground" which is a false narrative.

But if you rephrase it as "why run when there are plenty of other ways to stay fit ?"...it can be answer by a multitude justifications.

Cheaper than many gym memberships
Can be done anywhere
Good social scene and great way to meet people
Don't have to travel anywhere to do it
A different endorphin dump than lifting

to make sure im never comfortable with being average like so many on this board and in this state.

but running more than a mile is dumb imo, mainly cause i think it sucks I blame the army for my hatred of distance running. rather sprint, lift, carry heavy shite.

and yes running can be hard on your knees but not nearly as hard on them as being a fat arse who cant walk up stairs without them hurting.

But why? You are fit already and not training for war. Why do you want to destroy your knees?
