Let's discuss McKnight witness and the Times-Picayune

Creating a seperate thread as this is somewhat of a side topic.
From Normand:
Two points.
1) Hopefully they have the contact information for this witness, and can charge them with making a false statement to police.
2) Remember how the T-P/nola.com acted this day. They posted a video and pictures of people giving CPR to McKnight. They posted the witness statement and ran with it as fact. In an attempt to be first and sensational, they made no attempt to verify this statement or back it up with anything. This led to a crapstorm that, in other states, could have easily led to deadly protests.
Two entities died that day. Joe McKnight, and journalistic integrity at the T-P.
From Normand:
quote:
"We started Thursday afternoon with a witness who lied," Normand said. "A witness who said that Gasser got out of his car, popped caps through the wind shield of Joe McKnight's car, yanked him out of the car and popped him again while he was on the ground, (Gasser) saying that he had voted for Donald Trump and that he was going to show him. And we were off and running." Normand said that witness "told three different stories within the same hour." "Shame on that individual," he said. "And that started something going down a path that we collectively should be ashamed of ourselves."

The problem with that is the witness told the stories to media outlets, not to the police.

Most newspapers haven't had any integrity for quite some time. Once the news became primarily accessed online, clicks mattered more than reputation when selling ad space.

In the presser, Normand said the witness told a false story to the police as well, and changed their story three times in one hour.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised if a Trump support was accused of pussay grabbin by that logic.

I thought I had read something about that and didn't see it anywhere else after the fact.

Journalism died when the famous email from the NYT was leaked where the Editor said something along the lines of "80% true and posted online first beats completely accurate all day long."
