Just yesterday we found out that the state of Illinois is going to double the gas tax to $.38 per gallon, making it one of the highest in the country. And those people who care about the environment and drive electric cars, from whom they can't bleed some extra money for this? They raised their car registration by $100

This fricking state. I love Chicago so much, but not sure how much more I can take of this bullshite.

In addition to this gas tax bump we:

Pay about $90 a year for a "city sticker"...basically a charge to own a car in the city
Have one of the highest sales tax rates in the country, over 10%
Have incredibly high real estate taxes...I'll pay about $6,000 for my 1,100 sq ft condo this year
Pay $.07 a bag at the grocery store
We were going to pay $.01/oz for drinks (sweetened and not), but somehow the court struck that down...they'll probably try again
They're looking to push through a progressive state income tax, changing from the flat tax that has been in place for forever
I'm not a smoker, but those who are pay taxes of $3.66 a pack
Have tolls on all the expressways
Oh, and while the state is essentially junk bond level and heading toward bankruptcy, the state politicians just voted themselves a raise...imagine that...a job where the employees can give themselves raises
They're looking to add a tax to bars and restaurants within 10 miles of McCormick to fund an expansion there (but stadiums and arenas are exempt for some reason)

All I hear about is new taxes, and they can get so creative with those, but I never hear about their creative ways to cut fricking spending.

It's why Illinois has lost population every year since 2014 and while I may not be too far from leaving as well.

Nashville/Charleston people, I've been following the real estate there for a while now and it's starting to look REAL good.

tldr: Illinois is taxing its citizens to death

Yes, but in the city when there's no traffic it usually hums along at about 80.

They're missing out. No city in this country comes close to Chicago in the warm months.

is this for all of Illinois, or is this mostly Chicago specific taxes/fees?

Seattle, Salt Lake City, San Francisco (outside the poop zone), Denver, Phoenix, Boston, NYC, and Atlanta are all better than Chicago.

I googled to see if there was a list of most corrupt states.

This is one of the first links that came up and I didn't expect this.

This article might be more accurate.

It is an article about whether Louisiana, Illinois, Alabama or New Jersey is the most corrupt state.

Nashville is getting absurdly priced in the real estate game, but the city is great and no state income tax is great.

The burbs are still affordable and have great public schools though.

Come on down!

Not from May-September, and I say that with confidence. Chicago is my favorite city in the world for a few months out of the year. Unfortunately, it is a frozen wasteland the rest of the time, so I would never want to live there year-round.

As far as major cities go, Atlanta is mediocre year-round and hot as balls terrible in the summer.

San Fran and Seattle are cold and dreary.

Phoenix is like a blast furnace during the day, but can be a pretty cool place at night. However, it isn't anywhere near as convenient to get around as Chicago is with the L train. The same goes for Denver (which isn't far down the list from Chicago, as it is a great city in it's own right).

Salt Lake is much more boring than Chicago.

NYC is hot as balls in summer as well.

I don't know about Boston because I've never been, so I will withhold judgement.

Phoenix, Atlanta ,and NYC are better than Chicago in the summer?

If that's what you think you've done Chicago wrong.

Ho-Lee-shite No fricking Way

Chicago is so much better than Atlanta in the summer. I can't believe someone just tried to make that argument
