The better question is; why is your wife leaving so frequently for a hour ish?

I would not be okay with it either.

Not frequently. Dollar store, drug store, a few quick things from the local grocery. Or if she needs to take my daughter to piano lessons and i'll be home within an hour.

My 9 and 12 year old routinely stay home by themselves for 2-3 hour chunks of time. One day in the summer they were home all day by themselves.

My 9 year old did a 3 hour stint by himself the other day. He's a really chill kid and makes good decisions, so we're becoming increasingly comfortable with it.

helicopter parents will crucify you. You should be with your child every second of the day!!!!

What a pitiful, small-dicked mindset.

I think my first time getting drunk was when I was left alone and got into the liquor cabinet.

We used to go out in the woods by ourselves for hours and hours at a time and we survived. Kids today are too coddled and protected. A few scars and bruises are character builders.

We did it starting in 4th grade. He walked home from school and was there about 1 hour before him mom got home. He was able to be tracked by his phone by her, and we have cameras.

Both my parents worked long hours when I was growing up, I was on my own at home a lot, but that was back in the 70's, in dear ole Mandeville, crime wasn't an issue back then and the neighbors kept a close eye out for me and other kids in my situation.

What's your opinion on leaving kids home?

Not so much and opinion but just what we did.

I think we started leaving ours at home when the oldest was about 12 or so...which would have meant his younger brother was around 7 or 8. Not for long periods...like a run to the store...30 minute type trips. We didn't start going out and leaving them for hour plus trips until he was 14.

Part of that was he needed to be mature enough for us to be reasonably sure he'd not only make the right decision if something happened, but that he could also handle being in charge and not cause more problems with his younger brother than he'd solve.

Before then, I simply told them "Get your shoes on," and put them in the truck and we'd run errands.

The mileage of others may vary...

We use to let the Lithettes say at home at 10. But that was during the day and in the 90s and in Mandeville

Parents used to let there kids walk hours to town by themselves to buy groceries to bring back to the farm.

Has the mass media really scared everyone into thinking there is danger around every corner?

Mine are 10 and we've recently started letting them stay at home for an hour or two by themselves. Both are responsible kids.

There's actually a good bit of research that it all started with a high profile case in NY (I think) of an abducted kid in the early 80's. After that nationwide story, parents began to slowly clamp down, and ironically, many believe it's a large part of the reason why we have so much of this "safe space" bullshite arising, because those kids now college aged who were raised in that environment expect to be coddled so much by authority figures.

I've left my 9 year old for up to an hour before. She knows not to open the door, and she's basically upstairs playing the whole time. I wouldn't leave her without a phone to get in touch with me or anything, but for a quick trip to the store in the afternoon, no problem. That being said, I wouldn't leave her in charge of the 4 year old.

First grade I got off the bus and went home alone. Mom didn't get off work til 4. Watched cartoons and ate some cheese. No big deal. Nobody died.

My sister is four years older and we were left alone all the time. Especially during the summer. My dad would come home at lunch to check on us but that was about it. One time a tornado was reported near our house. We followed our tornado training and when our mom (during storm) came in frantically looking for us we were like, you better duck and cover. Kids nowadays are pussies.

Raise your kids and let other raise theirs.

What your child may be ready for at 8, another kid may not be ready for until 10.

As a parent, you know what your kid can handle.
