Leaving your kids home for a short period of time

I have a 10 year old son and an 8 year old daughter. Quick google search says it's legal to leave a 10 year old and older home by themselves. My wife (no pics) has been doing this lately as long as she's going somewhere close by and back within an hour. I'm not very comfortable with it. My son is an absolute rule follower and has a flip phone, so I understand why she feels ok with it.
What's your opinion on leaving kids home? What age did you do it and for how long?

My parents left us home all the time growing up. We lived in the country with no neighbors and no cell phone.

Everyone I knew was a latchkey kid in the 80s-90s, and the crime rate was much worse back then... parents are too helicopterish these days.

I leave my 12 and 8 year old all the time.. Started when he was 10/11.. Not at night (mainly because of them not me) and only for shortish times

I don't see anything wrong with it for an hour or so when it's necessaryat that age.
My sister and I would ride the bus home in 3rd/4th grade and usually be home alone for a bit.

I'm pretty sure I got off the bus and was by myself a good bit in 3rd-4th grade so 9-10 years old. Not for long, maybe an hour at most.

Depends on the kid. If you can trust them, go for it. Being left home alone is a maturity thing, not an age thing.

Depends on the kids......and how they are raised. We started leaving our kids at home alone for longer than an hour when they were 11 and 8..now they are 13 and 10 and they can stay home alone for as long as we need them to..but not alone overnight. they both have cell phones and we lock them in and turn on the alarm.
If the alarm goes off it sends me a text message immediately and I have security cameras that I can pull up on my phone to check in on them.

Surprised by the responses. Thought I'd get the opposite. I'm more ok with my son and less ok with my daughter in this case. Maybe it's a Dad/daughter thing.

Now this would make me feel better. But we don't have an alarm right now. Will in the future though.

For short times like that, we did it with ours, probably earlier than 10 years old. If you teach them to act right, I see no reason to worry.

If your 10 year old is responsible and won't do anything harmful to himself or the 8 year old, I don't see why it's an issue.

I have a son and daughter 2 years apart as well. They are 13 and 11 now. But we started leaving them home alone around the same age as yours.
They should be fine.

He is. Only issue is he plays video games and gets way too into them, causing him to not pay attention to anything going on around him. We have very well behaved kids.

The better question is; why is your wife leaving so frequently for a hour ish?

not only will it send me a text if it's set off, it will send me a text every time the code is punched in to disarm it.
I know the second my wife gets home from work or kids get home from school(they walk home sometimes) in the evenings because it send me a text that the alarm has been disarmed
