Where did that happen?

A vehicle is an extension of your home. ... that’s how it was explained to me.
Cops and CCW instructors and others who should know better say that all the time, but it's not the law.
The result (no CCW permit required to carry in console) is the same, but the "extension of the home" rationale is invalid. It is trotted out by all sorts of well meaning people. But it's just not correct in Louisiana.
You may get better advice on this sort of thing on the Outdoor board. There was a discussion of this on there recently.

Lot of confusing info, but the correct stuff is in here.
Can keep in it his vehicle, loaded, in center console or plain sight, without breaking the law. CC holders are required to tell LEO they have a weapon if pulled over, he doesn't have to.

If true, that is a total BS move by the police

Key phrase there being 'inform the police'. Don't show the police, don't take it out and put it on the passenger seat, don't unload it or do any of the stupid nonsense Facebook morons tell you to do. Keep you're hands on the steering wheel and just tell them exactly what and where it is.

No.
ETA: I actually called the state police a couple of years ago about this. My son was going hunting with some buddies and wanted to take his pistol. IIRC I was told that it is unlawful for someone under the age of 21 to be in possession of a handgun.
But I killed many brain cells since then so I might have remembered incorrectly

Sorry, that is what it is in Alabama.

Tell him to train a lot, not just shooting at the range, but going through scenarios as well, including what to do and not to do. Yes, you feel stupid sitting in your car alone going through this but it's the same element of training as anything else. Even better, but some of those snap cap bullets that you can pull the trigger on to add to it.

Call the State Police and ask.

This is great advice. If you have a handgun in your glove box along with your registration and insurance paperwork, when the cop asks to see the paperwork immediately tell them you have a handgun in there. They will appreciate it! They may ask if they can remove it before you dig around for your paperwork, ask you about it and might even run the serial number to make sure it isn't stolen but I'm not sure about them confiscating it unless it's stolen, you have drugs in your car, or they have a damn good reason on just a traffic violation. There's no probable cause to take it. Would they take your laptop or any other possessions in your car without cause? That sounds like some shady crap to me.

My 300 magnum has been in my truck (loaded) for three weeks.

I am not a lawyer, but I have watched a lot of Live PD. Everyone on the show who has a gun hidden under the seat gets arrested.

In what state? As said earlier, gun/vehicle laws vary widely from state to state.

I am a CHL holder and will carry my pistol on my person while driving. If I get pulled over (usually for speeding) I just get my DL out, my insurance/registration, roll all the windows down, and put both hands on the steering wheel until the officer approaches my vehicle and asks for my paperwork. I have never declared I am carrying although I think when they run your plates it identifies you as a CHL holder. If they have probable cause for a search then I would make them aware at that point but for a simple traffic stop I am not.

Make sure he doesn't keep it in the same place as his registration and insurance, and teach him to obey the officers during traffic stops. Let them know he has a pistol right away when pulled over and keep his hands on the steering wheel. I wouldn't want my son taking any chances.

Can my son who is 20 keep a pistol in his vehicle even though you have to be 21 to buy a pistol in the state of Louisiana?
I may be wrong, but its 21 to buy in a store. He can still buy and possess elsewhere. As long as he is above 18, he is gtg

Probably a good idea. His carjacking efforts will undoubtedly have more success if he is armed.
