It's threading the needle, but the key is to find a firm (probably small/medium sized) that is lucrative enough for you but consists of attorneys who recognize that being an attorney is their job, not a way of life. It'll never be 9-5, but the narcissism of the profession is what really destroys lives IMO.

They exist, but they're not easy to find. You'll likely need to be in/near a major city to find that where the money is still pretty good.

And another thing: for the most part, this is a thankless profession. Yep. Particularly in litigation.
As a litigator, this is very true. Of course, if you're going into this profession (at least on the law firm side) for thanks or pats on the back, you need to run fast. It takes a thick skin and certain kind of personality to last, IMO.

I have no doubt that it is a thankless profession, but everyone thinks they are in a thankless profession.

If you read the message boards on Top Law Schools, you will hundreds of people compaining about their jobs. Same with the people on journalism forums. People in academia who have it far worse than their parents' generation, people in investment banking (at least those who aren't wannabe Patrick Batemans), etc.

Except for medical device sales, I think it is easy to say that just about everyone in a well-regarded field is unhappy with their careers because the general office job work cycle flat out sucks.

What are the working hours for the AmLaw Top 250 firms in NOLA and BR relative to Houston and Dallas? I'd guess 50-55 hours/week in BR, 60 NOLA, 60-70 in Houston and Dallas. Is that close?

I can't imagine the hours would be the same when you look at the variance in opening salaries.

I think that is something that the OP needs to factor in. Excluding working hours, I'd say SMU is his best choice, then LSU.

Law school should be illegal.

If you want to practice law: get the Hell out of Louisiana. If you want to make money: get the Hell out of Louisiana. I'm not one of these "woe is me" lawyers out there who wished they'd gone to plumbers school, but comparing the economy in Louisiana to that of Texas is just laughable. I have a great job in Shreveport but sometimes I feel like a Mexican living in Ciudad de Juarez looking longingly through the fence at the prosperity on the other side.

First, I implore you not to go to law school just because "I don't know what else to do." That being said, if you decide to go, go to a school that offers a full ride. Pay attention to any stipulations on the scholarship - some schools require you to be in a certain percentage to keep it. I seem to recall LSU was just top 50%, which was very reasonable, as some schools require 20% or 25%. Beyond that, pick LSU or Houston depending on whether you want to live in LA or TX. long-term.

Otherwise, I would just repeat what LoveThatMoney said. From my perspective, going to law school was unquestionably a great financial decision. Whether it was a "great decision" in a broader sense is a little less clear.

Lawyers at relatively large firms in NOLA work just as much as lawyers at BigLaw in Dallas or Houston. They are just paid much less in NOLA because the market can't support the same rate structures that Houston and Dallas can.

I was accepted to all the schools that I applied to. Do you think UVA or UGA is really an option? 3.45 GPA with a 167 LSAT.

Probably, but it depends so heavily on city, firm, practice group and partner that you have 40 lawyer firms killing their associates and AmLaw 100 associates that have it relatively easy.

The best I've seen are buddies at IP firms, who go on 2 week work binges, then get a month or two of true work-life balance.

Not UVA, but possibly UGA, which is not nearly as competitive for admissions as UVA.

In/WL at UGA IMO, probably not at UVA. Maybe WL, but I'm betting no.

No Mark Cubans to represent in NOLA.

This is true to a certain extent, but I think it's particularly bad in the legal profession because everyone thinks they know as much as a lawyer. Very few people question a doctor's judgment, but clients of lawyers are always calling you or emailing you saying shite like, "My buddy's neighbor's ex-girlfriend said that we don't need to do xyz."

And, as a lawyer, your mind is your money. People ALWAYS want free legal advice. They FB you, they ask you questions at parties. Do they want you to represent them? No. Do they want to pay you for your time? No. They want a freebie.

Random ? for some of you lawyers. What % of lawyers actually litigate? I've heard it's a very small %.

What are the best areas of practice for someone who wants to spend as little time as possible litigating?
