A long drawn out ground war will hopefully tank the Russian economy and create civil unrest.
If that happened and the Russian government was overthrown or voted out ( ), it would be a good opportunity to try to set up a western oriented government in Russia and get them integrated into Europe. That would be massive if you wanted to encircle and put the squeeze on China which is something the US and Asian allies should be working on right now.

What happens when he starts to flood the Baltic states with Russian forces and provokes the next round of conquests? Because you know he is certainly not done.

Are we really going to stand idly by as he reestablishes the Warsaw pact?

So when does the European Union do something? NATO is required to defend the baltic states if i recall correctly.

It's required to do all kinds of things that member states don't actually do. And there's no consequence so they don't do them.

How many times NATO states go "not my problem, let americans pay the brunt of it."

What do you propose we do to handle this situation?

I can't help but wonder what Reagan would do...

On top of sanctions, I'd sack the wealth from the Russian oligarchy

I would also announce a temporary and limited defensive partnership with Ukraine SEPARATE from NATO. No troops on ground but we will lend/sell advanced defensive technologies to the Ukrainians and train them to use it.

I'd also quietly activate all American forces and begin training them making sure Russian satellites see it

Cant we just discuss whats going on without talking about us getting involved?
No, apparently if you simply want to discuss a potential major land war in Europe it means you suck Biden’s dick and for some really strange reason, support unchecked illegal immigration from Mexico.

What do you think virtually all the sanctions so far have been designed to do?

Rolling into the Baltics or other independent NATO sovereign countries in Eastern Europe is a whole different ballgame than if Russia rolls into separatist areas in eastern Ukraine IMO. If the Russians start invading other European countries I think a war would be warranted but Putin probably isn’t that dumb. He would not win against NATO unless he went scorched earth with nukes, in which case there is no winner.

Russia does want to have an amicable trade relationship with Europe - just on its own terms, not as an extended client state of the US like most of the EU. In fact, most of our posturing is to prevent this from happening, as an integrated and prosperous Eurasian bloc significantly threatens our (tenuous) hegemony.

Putin is not wrong in saying that Ukraine is an artificial country. Prior to 1991, there had never been an independent nation called the Ukraine. Throughout the centuries, the land called "Ukraine" had been controlled by a number of different countries, Poland, Russia, the Ottomans, etc.

Russia will take anything and everything they can get away with taking until somebody draws a hard line. It's like people have forgotten the whole pre WWII appeasement thing where the powers that be kept saying - "ah, it's just X country after all, they'll never go further."

Not our problem... those of you who want to send US troops in on the ground, would you be OK with sending yourself or your sons to go die there?

Which is the big reason why Putin and Russia are opposed to Ukraine joining NATO. He will no longer have the cover of ambiguity he has operated under in regards to Ukraine.

Ukraine is little more than a poker chip and a buffer to Putin.

That becomes increasingly more difficult to use to his benefit if the status quo of Ukraine changes.

Agree. My boys aren’t fighting in a silly war that’s going to get started no matter what in order to fix the economy and make the rich richer.

The senior White House correspondent for Bloomberg News is reporting that the Biden administration has ordered all remaining U.S. diplomats evacuated from Ukraine. They are relocating to Poland.
