Lafayette red light camera ticket--can they send you to collections?

It's $25 but I didn't run it. I made a right turn after stopping. Out of principle I don't want to pay it. What's the consensus--can you discard these things still?

Guilty until proven innocent.

Send them a picture of these

I got one a year ago for the same thing. I called and told them I wasn't paying it and why I wasn't paying it and the left me alone. Never sent to collections or anything.

Can they?
Probably, would you take the concession as a for-profit business without some type of mechanism to get payment?
I wouldn't have.
And there's an economy of scale issue at work here, if half of their $25 fees didn't pay, that's probably an appreciable amount of money they leave on the table. I'd want to have legal leverage to collect that if I were the agency.
If we are talking about a municipality doing this 100% in-house then that might be different.
Cities have to make a budget not a profit.
Good luck.

Got one about a month ago from the vehicle with cameras. Threw it in the trash.

They possibly could but don't. It's not legal. 3rd party contract. They can't enforce the payment because you didn't agree to it. You will get a couple of letters and they give up cause they start losing money trying to collect. It's all a money grab

Pay it in unrolled pennies. Preferably spill some coke on them and let it dry where they get really, really stick. Roll the stick pennies in hair.

You are going to get a ton of different answers to this. I started a thread on this a few months ago but I still haven't figured out what actually happens if you don't pay them.

Our 18 yo son got a ticket for either running a red light or speeding through it. We didn't fight it and made him pay it more as a lesson for why he shouldn't do what he did.

I have had about 5 of these since i moved to Lafayette in 2012. I haven't paid any and later received a letter from some collection agency or law firm in Ohio. I threw those out as well and nothing has happened. Has not hit credit, have not gone to jail, firm quit reaching out to me.

Everyone has told you nothing happens. You don't believe us?

Nope. Collections will try but credit bureaus will delete/disregard because there is no signed contracts in place of you agreeing to pay.

They have some law firm send you a letter regular mail. That firm tacks on $ as a late fee.
Then it goes away because there is no contract and there is no policeman giving the ticket.
I had one 2 yrs ago hit my credit. I disputed online and it was removed within a few weeks. Again, there is no contract of you agreeing to pay.
I've probably had 10+ of them and thrown them all away.
It's scare tactics. They are not part of local, state, or federal agencies. So their ticket can't go thru those courts, period.
Picture a Sam's wholesale truck pulling you over and writing you a ticket for speeding on a Sam's invoice.

And this is why red light camera companies exist today.

Possibly, but as others have said, a dispute online will easily remove any negative remarks on your credit report.
And since this is a civil violation, you should also know that unpaid citations are NOT reported to the Louisiana DMV or your insurance company.
Carry on to make the best decision possible for you.
