I know there was a thread a few weeks ago about. What is the OT opinion about allowing him to be buried there? I think it looks kinda bad that they had to petition to get what they want. Would have been better if the family just buried him elsewhere. IMO. Not trying to take away from his sacrifice or anything, I just think that he didn't die in combat or nay type of terrorist attack. Just a military exercise gone wrong. Got to draw the line somewhere, or they will be admitting many more people.

I have mixed thoughts on the matter, but it seems to me Arlington should be reserved for those who gave a lifetime of service and/or died under extraordinary circumstances.

Mixed feelings.
I'm tired of rules being changed or broken simply because of Twitter outcry and the offended

Well that's going to open up the petition floodgates.
The amount of service members that die in training exercises yearly and this is the first I heard of something like this.

I agree. People are used to just whining and getting what they want.

I have mixed but mostly negative feelings about it.
Think of it this way.
Why did his family want him buried in Arlington?
Because it is perhaps the most exclusive, hallowed ground for military burial.
Why is it the most hallowed?
Because they've had to say no to thousands and thousands of equally deserving families like this one before.
It ceases to be what it was, and what drew this family to want to bury there, if you just start breaking the rules & rulings required for this burial.

I saw a general and 2 of his wives buried there. If they can allow spouses they can allow this soldier.

My stepdad was recently buried at Arlington after lifetime service and my mother, who has never served, will be buried next to him.

So we are changing the rules to be fair?

With due respects for his service and condolences to his family for their loss, he shouldn't be buried there.

Why don't they just build a mausoleum

Now we can dig up all the other guys that died in a training accident and bury them there.
I know a kid that is a quadratic from an accident in basic training. I think he qualifies for an Arlington burial now.

This solder never fully left his parents and cleaved to his wife as the bible said. Because daddy wants him close to him so he can visit often. Wife won't be able to visit often.

i knew they'd cave. nothing is more powerful in this world than social media outcry.
and that is fricking pathetic.

Arlington should only be reversed for those that actually defended our flag and country aboard / in combat. This sets a bad precedent IMO.
This is the equivalent of a "participation" ribbon. You shouldn't get award for practically just signing up for a job.

This young man, while I thank him for his selflessness and readiness to defend our country if called upon, died via a work accident. If anything, his family should get workers comps, I think idolizing him for a non heroic act is far over the top

This is where I disagree. It wasnt like he was flying a cargo plane or pushing papers in admin. Dude was in a helo training with some MARSOC Marines in an environment that obviously killed them. That training was probably more dangerous than what most military members will ever do.
Battlefield deaths are down exponentially, if arlingotn gets filled, build another cemetery.
