It's common in Hawaii, so yes. At my cousin's house in Hawaii we take our shoes off before we enter.

Here in the midwest (KC) it is just common courtesy to not wear your shoes in a house, especially not your house.
Our house has a general rule where all shoes come off in the mudroom and stored in their cubbies like they are supposed to. No rules about slippers, socks or barefeet when inside, just don't run around inside with shoes on. Everyone around here is the same way.
As for origins of this common practice around here, I don't know. It is obviously easier on hardwood floors and carpet but not sure if that was the original driving factor.
