Just finished it. It's about the Osage Indians, and how they became the richest people per capita in the world because of the oil on the land in Oklahoma where they were basically forced to resettle, which put targets on their backs for murder by white bankers, lawyers, oilmen, etc in the 1920s. And murdered they were, without justice in the majority of the cases.

Its a fricked up story, and was a really dark period for the US justice system. It blows my mind how corrupt things were back then, and just how sociopathic many of these people were to do the downright sinister things that they did.

It also delves into the formation of the FBI, as this case was somewhat of a springboard for its development.

It makes me appreciate how far our justice system has come, even if it's still obviously nowhere near perfect.

Now we are killing people by the tens of thousands over seas every year for oil(in the name of freedom). I'm glad we got that whole killing for oil in America thing straightend out. Nice story.

Great book. The author's other big book was "Lost City of Z". That is a great book as well. The movie...not so much

If you read the rest of my post, I stated that it's still not near perfect, but I think it's safe to say that it's vastly improved from the 1920s.

These guys would get 1st degree murder convictions that otherwise would put them in the gallows, but since Indians were looked at as less than human by the general public, they'd get life, and then get let out on parole 6 years later. Cold blooded, convicted murderers.
