Kid suspended for wearing pro-veterans shirt to school

Principal gave the kid an opportunity to change the shirt or face the suspension. He chose the suspension. WWTOTD?
quote:
The shirt in question? It's a grey T-shirt printed with the words "Standing for Those Who Stood for Us," which seems like a typical patriotic shirt. But it was the illustration on the shirt that caught the school administrations' eyes. There's a pair of combat boots with a rifle standing inside which is holding up a helmet—aka a traditional soldier memorial. While there's nothing wrong with honoring soldiers, the picture of the rifle is against Dexter McCarty Middle School policy which states "clothing promoting alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or violence" and "clothing containing objectionable language or symbols, including weapons" are prohibited on school campus.

frick that school, good for the kid for choosing suspension

Not violate the fricking dress code policy. I think just about every school, if not all of them, has a policy prohibiting wearing shirts that display guns, cigarettes, illegal contraband and the like.
Why the frick is it hard to follow clear and simple rules?

I think i side with the school. It seems like they basically said "look just go change the shirt" and the kid decided to make an issue out of it.

School policy, and it's not even anything new.

This will get more sympathy here than a 4 year old adorable girl getting stitches on her face...

Seems like this all played out appropriately to me.
Kid wore a shirt to school with a weapon on it, against the rules, regardless of how it's depicted.
Principal gave him the chance to change rather than immediately suspend him, that's being reasonable.
Kid refused, kid gets suspended. Actions have consequences.
Nothing wrong with any of this.

Rules are rules. At least he was given the option to change before being suspended.

I had to turn my Margaritaville shirt inside out.

In junior high I wore a shirt with this image on it, was a black shirt and Dr. Evil was on it in just white ink.
Anyways, the principal told me to never wear it again or I'd be suspended.

I can see both sides, and I can definitely see why people would side with the school. "Rules are rules"..and I typically tend to agree with that line of thinking. However, I think we need to use some common sense once in a while.
I think the phrase "objectionable" puts this in a gray area. An album cover with some gangster brandishing an assault rifle...ok that I can see being against the rules. Some horror villain wiht a big arse machete, ok I get that. A known, standard solider memorial that simply has a rifle (ie, not being pointed at anyone, not being used maliciously or aggresively, it's simply there) on it shouldn't be seen as "objectionable", IMO.
Alcohol, drugs, violence, bad language....those are things where there probably isn't much of a gray area and I can see zero tolerance. But this is a bit different.

I personally have no issue with the shirt but how hard is it to follow fricking rules in todays society.

quote:It's unfortunate, but the shirt does fall under the policy. Suspended, though? Just tell the lad he's honorably worn his shirt and supported his cause, but since it does have a symbol that falls under the policy he will need to get a new shirt.

I don't like what I just typed, but it's fair.

The rules don't apply to everyone, don't you know that?
Good for the kid for being patriotic, but there's no reason to be disrespectful. Good for the administrator for not being a dick and enforcing the rule immediately. He made a reasonable request to CYA so he didn't end up with kids wearing nazi shirts and inciting riots with images of other things.

Violation of school policy, veteran related or not.
Move along, nothing to see here. They even gave him a chance to change it.
Douche move.
