The owners are so happy they got financed they don't dare knock the car.

83 problems per 100 vehicles?

17% non-lemons?

Not really.

A "problem" can be something as simple as a person having trouble pairing their phone's bluetooth to the car's infotainment system.

This list really doesn't help much b/c it doesn't give what the issues are that each brand is having. JDP has 8 categories of problems so there is a wide range of things that people could be taking issue with.

For example, it's almost 100% that one the the problems for FCA vehicles is the monostable gear shifter that they recently put a recall out for b/c it's apparently too difficult for people to look at their dash to make sure they are in park before they get out of the car.

Not sure what to say here... I have a 2008 spectra with "only" 70,000 miles on it... Very nice car. have had zero problems with it. But I take care of my cars so that may be a reason.. I also have a 2013 Optima that runs like a champ.. Only 24,000 on t...

Honda's paint quality sucks I know that for sure.
More faded out Honda's then anything else out there. Chryslers paint blows too

Honda has had tons of paint issues. Clear coat peeling, failing, etc.

They used to be pretty good about warranting it, but then they started denying it.

My 1989 prelude has a great paint job. It has held up very nice considering how old it is... Runs like a top as well.

I'm most surprised by the high scores of Porsche and BMW.

They've always been nice cars, but were known to have lots of maintenance problems.

And expensive as hell to fix. I remember back in 94 working as a parts guy that a set of plug wires for a Porsche was like $300. Screw that.

We own a Mazda and a Subaru. Both are far better cars than this list is saying.

It was mostly after that, really.

Late 90s and early 2000s.

I think people have to remember how these surveys are graded.
For example, if an owner can't figure out the user-interfaces or they are not intuitive, that is scored as a defect.
All "defects" are not equal.
Ford trucks get beat up b/c of Sync, yet the truck itself is very reliable.

You really have to dig into these things to get the real story.

Generally, too, a guy buying a Porsche (or any premium brand) isn't going to knock it in a survey, even if the car has issues. No one wants to admit they made a high-dollar mistake.

There's a bit of truth in both.

BMW has improved and Honda has declined.

Initial quality is next to meaningless for the reasons already posted.

Long term reliability is what to pay attention to.

Also on the ignore list are many of the review sites and 10 best awards because they basically sell spots to manufacturers.

Hyundai at 2 is ridiculous. Every vehicle they produce has transmission issues, and they are cheaply made.

Kia has shown remarkable improvement since 2012.
