I know there are frequent speeding questions, but I searched and couldn't find anything about kenner. I got a speeding ticket for 35 in a 20. I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with Kenner traffic court? Can I claim first offense and ask to complete defensive driving since I have a clean record? I'm only 22 so I'm sort of nervous because I've never had to do anything like this before.

35 in a 20?

You better get a good lawyer man. Minimize the jail time.

You can claim anything you want. But they'll primarily just use your driving record anyway so it won't matter.

Most places first offense gets a slap on the wrist provided you show up. You aren't going to hell or anything, simple speeding infractions are about as minor as it gets. If you rack up a ticket every month that's another matter of course.

Yes (no to the defensive driving, not sure if they offer that here. But they do offer lesser violations if you go before your court date with money to pay a fine.

For as bad as Kenner can be on traffic laws the clerk and ADA can do some pretty good deals with you. They will probably make it a non moving if you agree to pay a fine and court costs. (usually less than the speeding offense - unless school zone, then prepare your anus)

Also there is article 894 or something (not a lawyer) and you can use that as your free get out of a citation pass, but I wouldn't ever waste that on a ticket.

You can claim first offense, pay your fine, and that's it. Nothing on your record.

ETA: The judge will offer it to you. You don't have to do anything special.

Thanks for all the information. I'm guessing I can expect to spend a good chunk of the day there?

Call the clerk, and ask if you could set up an appointment with someone there to settle the citation. Usually you go up there before your ticket and it is quicker.

I do know this. You can get a lawyer to go there for you and they seem to take care of the fines for the best rate.
I like an idiot never used one for traffic court, but my friends that did would pay like $100-150 and I would pay more than that in fines.

I would call the DA's office and see if you can't handle it without having to drive in 4 hours.

I had a similar situation 3 years ago in Iowa, LA. I showed up to the city council building asked them if it were possible to reduce the ticket to a non-moving violation (for my insurance's sake). They told me if I paid the court fee, $120, and had a clean record that I could write a note to the judge explaining my situation and ask for a reduction. Sure enough, the judge lowered the offense to a tail light or something insignificant. All they want is the money. If you pay the court fee and ask nicely, granted you have a clean record, the judge will usually reduce it to a non-moving violation so it won't count against your insurance. Good luck with it though. I hope you have the same luck I did.

Setting up an appointment sounds like a good idea so I might try that. Unfortunately, I only have 1 more week until my court date (got the ticket in December) so I don't think a lawyer is possible.

Jesus, just call the DA and say you don't want it on your record. You don't even have to go in, just mail in a check. It's that simple

I have probably gotten 100 tickets in my 13 years of driving(I am not lying). You can do this with any ticket, anywhere. I've even done it with ones that I was required to go to court. All they want is the money. They couldn't give two shits about your record.
