Doesn't matter. We're all going to be replaced by Watson in 10 years.

"Sixty-eight percent of doctors who complete all their training in one state end up practicing there, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges"

LINK

Article is a few years old, so stat may be that much older. 70% is the number I remember admins talking about when trying to get people to stay after graduation

I can't speak for anyone else, but I plan on returning to LA after residency if I do it out of state. I want to go to the best program to make me the best doctor. I know LA has it's flaws, but it's my home and people here need healthcare.

You'd have trouble throwing a rock in the air without it landing on a doctor in Lafayette

Actually, that's not true. They're more likely to stay where they do residency than to return home.

Link?

I don't want to go back. LA is fricked.

You don't count as "most." I've got friends who did exactly what he was referring to. Residency at Birmingham, MUSC, St. Louis, NYC then back to LA.
Likewise, your friends do not count as "most." Statistics show that residents are more likely to stay in the area where they do their residencies than they are to return home.

Is LSU not filling their residency slots?

Lots of spots filled with FMGs

Not sure why people are down-voting that. It's the truth. And a lot of those FMGs will stay local.

It's not the worst thing in the world. Even to match in non-competitive specialties, FMGs have to be at the top of their classes to match into residency programs in LA. In a way, even though LA is losing some of its best and brightest, we're gaining some of India's best and brightest.

I find that to be completely false.

I guess it depends what you mean by area. If you mean city, then I think your wrong

If you mean state or region, then maybe

article misses the mark

I matched out of state because there were many more and better spots. La is a small pond when it comes to medical education.

I never returned because the job I have here is twice as good as any I could have gotten in La.

"healthcare budget on the chopping block" really has nothing to do with it

Many of those Louisiana docs will return after their residency

This is 100% wrong.

I cant think of a single person from my LSUNO class that matched out of state and now practices in La.

They have been lamenting this same thing every match day for 20 years. Except for rural areas, like in almost every state, there are doctors available.

Most I know who leave the state do so not because they want to, but because there are either:
A. No jobs here that want to hire them right out of school
B. The jobs here pay 30-50% less than the same job one state over in Texas.

If they want more graduates to stay here, they need to only offer them the job at a salary remotely comperable to other places.

Louisiana isn't the number one state represented at Tulane med school. There are more students from California than there are from Louisiana. It is one thing for it to be 50% LA and 50% out of state but the fact that another state on its own outnumbers the Louisiana students is pretty nuts.

You mean the mental cost of having to live amongst fat trashy white people and ghetto arse black people in a state where if you don't just love fishing there isn't much to do?

I could be waaay off base but here goes :
After attending medical school in Louisiana wouldn't doing a residency away from LA give you a different perspective on your specialty. It seems to me that getting doctors back to LA after their residency should be where the emphasis should be placed.
But I do see where the possibility exists that a doctor could tent to practice where they did their residency.
Interested to see what others have to say .
